Default Need Help!! SW24-3 4” Engraved 44Spec

I recently purchased this S&W 24-3 4” engraved .44 Special model. I bought from a family friend and they may have engraver paper but currently I do not. The engraved initials are P.P.
I have enclosed some pictures. Any information on this gun, engraved or value. I would greatly appreciate any and all information. Thank you

Very nice! Very, very tasteful engraving. That is the epitome of a Texas Bar-B-Que handgun. Perhaps you will live in Texas someday. .....

The engravers initials P.P. may suggest Paul Piquette as the engraver. Congratulations on a nice looking gun.

That is one heck of a first post! Beautiful gun. Can't tell you anything about the engraver. I assume that you already know that of the Model 24-3's the 4" version is the rarest at 2625 produced.

Welcome to the forum.

Adios,

Pizza Bob

Paul Piquette engraved at S&W from 1976-1999. I have owned two S&Ws engraved by him. He does excellent work.

That is a beautiful gun. It may be the lighting, but it doesn't look blued to me.

I was confused why it’s not blued either. I bought as an investment piece from an ex girlfriend who’s father passed away. I know these guns don’t come up for sale often.
Does the P.P. A definite Paul Piquette?
What would the value of this gun be around range?
I appreciate everyone’s information so far, it is a 24-3 - 4”.
The papers may be somewhere in the house but I am
Not sure.
Thanks

I’m not a fan of engraved guns, generally speaking but that is a nice-looking piece.

I'm just curious here if Paul was a engraver for S&W does that indicate that the gun was sent back to them and engraved and nickel plated?
The box indicates it started life as a blued revolver.

Saw the box label and and now I’m curious too. Is that porting on the barrel?
Side question, did Paul Piquette sign his work with initials or did he use his full name? That would narrow down the possible engravers.

Would say that this one really needs a letter...

Yes, that barrel is Mag-Na-Ported. Not sure if there were any factory original guns made in the 1980s that were so done but there have been Distributor Exclusives that were Mag-Na-Ported from the factory...

Also the Combats are missing...

To start with it needs pictures of the frame with the stocks removed to see if it went back to the factory. I like the revolver but there are a couple of things that concern me. The nickel finish seems to be satin and the hammer and trigger seem to be plated.
Just took a closer look I see no S&W logo on either side.

OK guys I may be totally off base here but I'm beginning to think it may be a 624 in a 24-3 box which isn't a bad thing. If the OP would show a photo of the yoke it would it would be a way to identify it one way or the other or it's a 24-3 plated by magna port with one of their finishes.

Ported and armoloy finish, maybe....

Keith what do you think about the lack of the S&W loge on either side of the revolver, at least I don't see one?

That gun is a stainless 624. The box doesn't belong to it. I bet that if you look inside the yoke, it will be stamped 624. It is really nice, nonetheless!

I had a 27 engraved, the engraver polished off the roll markings,

instead of engraving around them....

The magna-port armoloy finish is very hard to tell from stainless so a look at the yoke would be one of the only ways to tell.

Very common Keith, but in the beginning of this thread a S&W engraver was mentioned, I don't think any S&W engraver would polish out the logo unless they did it on their own time.

That is a very good question....
I wouldn't think so, what with the revolver in question not being 'full coverage' engraved.

Folks do al sorts of 'treatments' to their firearms.

This blued pre-24 was outside engraved and finished in french grey.

Refinished outside the factory and ported (clue!) after the engraving (original on a blue gun). Of course, the yoke pics would help. It's my story.

I've never figured out how they do that "Pickled" finish and have it hold up to the elements.

I was always led to believe that S&W refused to let any engraver identify themselves on the gun. I'm also feeling it is a 624 looking at the close up of the engraving. Non factory stocks.

Here is the serial number. It’s is a 24-3.
I’m no collector and just want to learn more about this gun. I have reached out to Paul P on FB and waiting for him to reply.
Any and all other info would be appreciated.

Thanks

The OP's revolver finish looks a lot like the finish on one of my 53s....

Thanks for the additional pics. We need the yoke and one of the frame with the grips removed. What is your assessment with gun in hand of the finish?

I stand corrected. But here's my question. When you look at close up photos of the engraving, the edges look sharp and you can see drag marks from the tooling. So was it coated, then engraved? The other thing is that I would have bet a crisp, new Benjamin that the hammer and trigger were stainless. It is a really nice piece. Tasteful engraving. It does need a nice hand tooled leather holster. If you decide to shoot it, which you should, you are going to love it.

Looks like someone's initials are engraved under the cylinder release. Very interesting revolver.

And the front strap of the grip has been cut down while the back strap of the grip has been re-checkered.

That's just a cool custom revolver....I like it.

I'd say it was hard chrome plated.
The checkered back-strap is a nice touch. I've never checkered a back-strap.
Have checkered a lot of top-straps and barrel ribs.

When I have one hard chromed, I generally leave the hammer and trigger c/c ....
On those stainless revolver, I believe the hammers & triggers are hard chrome plated.

This has got me to thinking of another custom build of my own.

I appreciate everyone’s comments. I’m new to this whole S&W collector / shooter world. I just wanted to know more about it and learn from everyone.
Can anyone give me a real world estimate on value ? ( I know it’s worth as much as someone’s willing to pay)
And can anyone summarize the facts in layman’s terms of what this gun is/ turned into and yes the gun needs a holster.
Thanks
Art

This is just my opinion and having owned many 24s, both pre-model number and modeled numbered revolvers.

I've own several 24-3 and 624s. Even one of the early 24-3 that was yoke stamped 29-3.

Now as to your custom 24-3. It's nicely engraved, ported 4 inch, front strap clipped for custom stocks, appears to me to be hard chrome plated...

At a high base of 1500.00 to 1250.00
engraving +500.00
porting - 300.00
Plating - 200.00
Clipped frt strap - 100.00
check'd bk strap 0.00

So I'm thinking 1400. on a good day to 1250. on an average day, maybe.

But, that's just me talking here.

The other option is that when the gun went back to the factory for engraving it was fitted with a plain side plate (with no roll mark) and then engraved. I believe that also happened on occasion.

Tom Frieburger, a long time factory engraver confirmed that it was company policy for engravers not to mark their guns - HOWEVER, I have more than a few factory engraved guns where the engraver marked his/her work...

Question on the guns you have that display the engravers mark are they more discreet then what is shown on the OPs gun?

I love the gun, with all of its modifications. The engraving is tastefully done - not overdone. The unicorn is well proportioned. Mag-na-porting is always well done. The finish is evenly applied. And the clipping of the front of the grip frame was a common modification in the law enforcement world of the 1970s and 1980s - made popular by Fuzzy Farrant. I have a snubbie M&P that got that treatment...

Is is original - no. BUT it is tastefully done and it is a very fun gun.

Do you know anything about the person whose initials are under the thumb piece (it looks like "WHG")?

Thank you for sharing!

Usually, but not always. Often times, it is marked under the thumb piece, sometimes under the grips, and other times in plain sight. I have also observed that guns that went back to the factory for engraving have a much greater likelihood of being marked by the engravers in a more obvious manner.

This is one that left the factory as an engraved gun in April 1991. Notice the prominence of the engraver's signature...
