Default Model 21-4 Thunder Ranch Question

Has anyone removed the gold logo from the side plate on these guns?Wondering if it’s possible and if so how difficult. Considering one of these revolvers but having a hard time getting past the “decoration”.

I'm pretty sure a Dremel tool and a stone wheel would do it. I am not sure I would recommend it though.

Contact S&W and ask how much to fit a new side plate. The 22-4 Thunder Ridge did not have that marking so it might be possible.

You can find non-TR embellished model 21-4s, but probably a little less common. If you point it in a safe direction you shouldn't see the sideplate.

You can try putting a piece of duct tape over it.

Default Mod. 22-4

Another option would be to find someone who has one of the TR revolvers without the badge and try to work out a deal . I know a fellow that possesses such a gun and has no great attachment to it .

The side plates are now pretty standard fit. You could try just getting another side plate from S&W

Edit:
Numrich may have it also.

I contacted S&W years ago about a new no gold logo for my 21 and they quoted me a price of over $300.00 for the plate and the fitting .

Or a Hogue Monogrip will cover most of it. At least it did on the one I had.

If you havent already, maybe chat with a local gunsmith. $300 would definitely turn me off as well.

Thumbs down

I don't blame you for not liking the gold thingy; the owner of Thunder Ranch(Clint Smith) didn't like it either. S&W went ahead and put it on and heard lots of boos.

Don't screw the gun up or spend lots of money to get a new side plate. It'll cost too much. Just let it go and watch Gun Broker for a plain one.

Patience will save you money.

Thanks for the replies. Probably follow Iowegan’s advice. Of course never underestimate the use of duct tape.

All good suggestions above, but keep in mind, when you're shooting the Model 21-4, you can't see the gold thingie on the side.
Mine is such a great shooter that there's no way I would ever let it go.

As I recall, ol' Clint didn't object so much to the design of the stupid logo, as he did to our objections to the stupid logo. Regardless, I own one of those carbuncle'd contraptions; hoping that the much-despised relic will appreciate in value like those nasty old K32's did back in the 70's. I like the duct tape suggestion. -S2

I think you should just give it to me and be rid of it, problem solved.

I don't know if this would work, but perhaps an ultrasonic cleaner would take it off. I've seen them remove or loosen stuff from firearms that the owners didn't want removed. But I don't know how that gold logo was applied. Is it actual gold leaf, or some kind of electro-plating?

I had much the same reaction as you did. But after awhile I guess I got over it. The stock grips/stocks not so much, they were promptly replaced!

I had a S&W 544 that was just wonderful except for the gold-inlayed design that really looked to me like the most prominent thing on the south end of a northbound Husky. I do miss shooting that pistol, but agree with the duct tape solution.
