Good News / Bad News
The good news is that I got my 929 back from the gunsmith yesterday. Converted to DAO with a 6# pull that reliably set off a whole box of the ammo I intend to use (Federal).
The bad news that I probably won't get to use this in a match until, I'm guessing, September.
Adios,
Pizza Bob

Nice! Who did the work? What kind of grips are those?
Thanks for sharing.

David Olhasso - formerly of Team S&W, presently of Team Ruger. He has touched all the revolvers I use in local competition, in one way or another. This is probably the most comprehensive build he has done for me, but my 625-8 PC runs a close second, but it got there in steps, not all at once.
The grips are Nills knock-offs by KSD (still don't know how they get away with it - but they are in Turkey). They feel great but the wood is a bit soft. I don't abuse my guns, other than trying to pull the trigger as quickly as I can, so they work fine for me. Someone on Dave's level (Grand Master) may need something more durable. I have three sets because I really like the way they fit my hand.
Adios,
Pizza Bob

Looks ready to rock. Cut the comp clean off! Those stocks really got my attention. Who sells them in USA?
Interesting that you're using Federal ammo...factory or handloads? I tried running Fed. 147s in my 929. The extraction was a big problem. Then I saw a comment that Winchester brass worked well. I run 125gr coated handloads behind 5.9gr Viht 3N37 which chronos 1170fps from the 929.

Wouldn’t make a bad home defense piece loaded with hollow points.

You know, it really looks kind of "right"with the bobbed hammer. I never would have thunk! Nice gun, best of luck in competition. Hopefully soon.

That's great Bob! As long as its reliable. Hope it turns out well, once all this madness subsides.
Great to see we have another 929 owner here....

Very nice! I have had some extraction problems with my 986 Pro Series, have to tap the extractor against the bench to dislodge the clip full. The chambers have been polished and look about like mirrors, but my handloads still stick. I'm loading 4.5 gr 231 behind a 124 JHP. It chrono's about 1100. When newly clean I can extract the first clip full, but all the rest need help. Any Idea's?

Are you using Winchester brass (as per S&WIowegan)? Have you measured the chambers with a pin gauge? Can they stand to be made slightly larger?
Beyond that, I've got nothing.
Good luck and thanks for the kind words re: the 929
Adios,
Bob

We have two local shooters who run 986s for steel matches. I'll check with them on what loads they use including the brass. I know it seems silly to find some brands of brass stick and others don't.
My only caveat is these fellows might be using 38 Short Colt brass.

I have had to tell myself not to use mixed brass, when loading for my 9mm's. Unless it's to just throw brass on the floor for the autos.
I've had good results with Winchester 9mm brass and starline 38 short colt brass.
These are the primer dents on some 9mm factory ammo. Remington 115gr UMC FMJ. These can also work well, but dont reload well for me. They jam in my sizer, so I end up throwing them.
I also bent my extractor on my 986-but had the factory fix it for me, when I broke the hand . It bent on mixed brass and had to pound the extractor with an armorers hammer. So for that, I'll only use Winchester or starline brass(38 short). Unless I find some Remington cheap again.

Last month, you said 6#'s was too little for DA work. And now its perfectly fine ?
What gives Bob?
(Yes. I'm being hard on you.)

Guilty, but I think that was out of context. People just changing springs and fooling with the strain screw may find light strikes below the 7 - 7.5 pound threshold. This gun has had a complete action job - polishing and shimming. And at this point I only have my Smith's say so on this - heck, I can make any gun fail - it's like the Midas touch in reverse. We'll see.
Adios,
Pizza Bob

I got a buddy that likes to say, " if it wasn't for bad luck, I'd have no luck at all!"
You just reminded me. Midas comment.
Here's my 929. It's at 8.5# DAO. It sets off Winchester and CCI primers along with most factory ammo. And 38 short Colts.
I usually hacksaw off the hammer spurs of new hammers and leave the original equipment in little ziploc's with a note where they're from.
I do that to most of the revolvers I shoot regularly. The one I haven't still bobbed, is my (the wife's) 686+PC which would probably be an amazing gun once she stops shooting SA.
Haha!

Lou:
Another thing that contributes to the lighter pull-weight being effective is that the hammer is not a bobbed factory hammer, but a TK skeletonized hammer. Lighter hammer=higher velocity (hammer speed)=more kinetic energy imparted to the FP, which is also a competition part with a lighter spring. Much different than just a main & rebound spring changeout.

Pizza Bob
