Default Took my M&P 340 for a spin yesterday

I have had and carried my M&P 340 for several years. I do not shoot it anywhere near enough, compared to my other carry bottom feeders. I took it out yesterday and shot some .38's through it. I did OK with it but not up to my level of performance with any of my other semi auto's. Then I put some white box 110 gr. .357's through it after putting on a pair of light gloves. I found that I actually shot it more accurately with the .357's in it than I did with the .38's. I was not all that bad either. Granted they were 110's and not 158gr. loads. I am thinking that the M&P 340 is regulated for .357 from the factory and that may be the reason for the better accuracy with that load. I carry it with 135gr. Gold Dot SB loads. Wondering who generally carries .357's in their J's.

I practice with and carry 125 gr Gold Dot, Golden Saber and XTP in my 360 Airweight all the time. I did replace the stock grips with a Hogue monogrip and it shoots much better and helps manage the recoil in the little gun as finger slap was brutal but now don't get any.

I carry Barnes TAC-XPD 357 125gr in mine and even with the titanium cylinder, it’s not horrible to shoot. I only carry my M&P 340 in my coat pocket so for what it’s role is, it shoots just fine at 5 yards.

I'm pleased to see that folks now really believe there is a Santa Claus and are using 110gr .357 ammo in their M&P 340s. And also, that these loads are not murderous to shoot in moderate amounts.

But, again, NOT in the 340PD variant with its Ti cylinder. Good shooting to all.

I carry the 135 grain Speer GDSB .38 Special +P in my M&P340. Uncle Mike's boot grips on it most of the time, sometimes S&W service stocks.

No recoil issues.

I don't notice a difference between it and my M642.

I could definitely tell you, blindfolded, if I was shooting the M&P340 or my M640 no-dash, but the results would never be (and have never been in qualifying) consistently different.

I've been wanting to try the 135 grain Speer GDSB .357 load. It's only a little faster (listed as 990 vs. 860 FPS at the muzzle) so I suspect the recoil won't be dramatically greater, but the additional velocity may be a bit of insurance for penetration and expansion.

Some other 1300 FPS type .357 load? Probably not for me in this gun.

Anyone tried the 135 Speer short barrel .357?

My 340PD had about 5,000 of the Remington 158s through it initially.

It was all old inventory from when we switched to 9MMs. We had lots of partial open cases. To make this use legitimate, around one hundred of my fellow Troopers practiced with and shot the off duty qualification using my 340PD

I am sure there is no surprise, that not everyone qualified

It did get a set of CT laser grips early on for the newer M&P 340. It is much more pleasant to shoot

When the Remington ran out I went through the old Hornady Custom 140JHPs. There were almost 2000 of those on hand. I really liked this load, It was very, I mean Very accurate in any 357 Magnum revolver I tried it in

Now most of the J-Magnum snubbies have 125 Gold Dots in them.

As you alredy noticed, the 357 Magnum Speer short barrel is just slightly faster.

The 135 Speer short barrel .357 Magnum is like a 357 Magnum -P. Or consider it a 38 +P++

I have hardly shot at all since I moved over a year ago. I need to get back in the groove.
I have not even set up he loading presses yet

Winchester PDX1 125 gr in mine. Magnum rounds aren't fun in these little guns.

On the M&P 340 square, while we're discussing it:

How are you carrying yours?

I usually use an Alabama kydex pocket holster, or a Harry's holster IWB; the outrider is a Safariland ALS paddle.

I like kydex. It never gets soft. It never gets floppy. You never have to worry about it.

I only pocket carry the 340s. In a front pant or shorts pocket, no holster

In a jacket pocket I will carry a 640 or a 940

If I am wearing a holster, either belt or ankle I will usually carry a Model 60

Pocket carry, sometimes in a coat pocket but mostly front pants pocket. I have a couple of pocket holsters but carry it without a holster a lot.

I carry my M&P340 crossdraw under a shirt. Hides well and carries easy while driving the car which is something that was always uncomfortable in other positions. In the pic you can see that the holster is belted opposite of the way it was intended. This works really well for me. It clears leather fast and is easy to re-holster. I can draw while belted into the drivers seat which is nearly impossible to do carrying in other positions.

I find that I am more accurate with 357 mag in my 340PD too. My theory is that I want it to count if my fingers are going to take that high felt recoil.
