Default CCW Renewal Carry Gun Choices

Last week I took the class for my second renewal.

We have to renew every two years and re-qualify.

Three guns are allowed on your license, and you have to shoot and qualify with each.

CCW issuing is done by county, and this is the rule in my county. Other counties allow more guns. But many counties won't issue permits at all.

Anyhow, the picture below is my choices, starting at the top:

1. S&W 431PD -- 32 H&R Magnum.

2. S&W 649-0 -- 38 Special.

3. S&W 340PD -- 357 Magnum Centennial shrouded hammer.

I had a couple LCRs on my license, along with the 431PD this time, but decided to standardize on Smiths. The 340PD and 649 were recent acquisitions.

I found I carried the 431PD 90% of the time during the last two years. Like the light weight.

I figure I'll carry the 340PD a lot this time around. Probably go back and forth between it and the 431PD.

The 649 will get a lot of use for practice. It's cheaper and easier to find ammo for than the 431PD, and it's easier on my hands than the 340PD.

When qualifying with the 340PD, at the end of only 30 rounds, I found my trigger finger covered with blood.

Put the Crimson trace green laser grips on it to fix this problem, but haven't tried them yet at the range since all the ranges are shutdown due to the virus. I expect it will enable me to shoot 357 Magnum defense ammo (or at least 38 Special +P) with no problem.

For the next couple months I'll be carrying the 431PD as it's currently on my license until the middle of June.

Wanted to get a jump on the CCW renewal class and range qualification since it wouldn't surprise me those got shut down also. The rest of the renewal process is on-line so I should be OK.

I never thought I'd feel the need for two carry guns, but then a lot of things are happening recently I never thought I'd see.

I figure if I need to carry two guns, I'll choose the 649 and the 340PD as they can share reloads.

I'm in San Diego and we're only allowed 3 and have to renew every 2 years as well. I had 1 wheel gun in my line up for a bit but have since rotated it out. All 3 of mine are semi auto's now, a .45 and 2 .40's. No full size for carry, either.

Glad I escaped CA. My permit renews every 5 years and weapons allowed says “handgun”.

Seems your stuck in a pretty narrow field........

are they listed by model or serial number???

If it was me, and thank God it's not, a J--frame, my 3" 66 and a high cap 9mm probably my Shorty 9 or 6915....... gives me options...... and the J-frame can always be a second/ backup to one of the other two.

5shots to 18 ( 69xx with a 59xx Mec-Gar mag and +2 adaptor.)

I considered something like that.

But I always pocket carry, and am not interested in trying to carry guns too big for a normal pants pocket. I wear 5.11 Covert Khakis in the winter and cargo shorts in the summer.

So anything bigger than a J frame doesn't cut it.

I guess I'm lazy, but I found from experience, that given the choice of the small, light 431PD and other heavier and larger guns I opt for the 431PD every time.

I had a 60-15 3" on my license for a year, and I shoot it better than the smaller, lighter J frames, but at the end of two years I realized I'd never carried it even once.

I figure I'll end up carrying the 340PD and the 431PD most this year.

Merced county is the same. Renewals are still getting done but new initial permits are not being done until the shelter in place is lifted. Our sheriff is pro second amendment but he does not permit carrying two guns at a time. I just renewed and put a M&P body guard 38 revolver on my permit. Never had a polymer gun before but I am getting to like it.

Being a handgun hunter, I would probably have a couple unusual carry guns on my Cali permit.

That's sad.

Some states are ridiculous.

I just renewed mine online, $20.75.

Its good for another 5 years and I can carry anything I want.

Its a Concealed Firearm Permit with no restrictions.

I renewed mine this past Jan. (at least it wasn't snowing when we qualified). IL is good for 5 years, and no restrictions on what kind or how many or having to qualify with multiple handguns. I can carry any handgun I own.

Thankfully, I got mine done shortly before the crazyness. We are allowed 10 on our permit here in Kern County, but right now I only have 4: my 442, my Glock 19, a Colt 1911, and my 657 Mountain Gun.

I've got more in the safe, but this gives me a decent range of carry options.

I carry the S&W 340PD Airlite. I qualify my CCL with a revolver - Legal here - my S&W High Patrolman and keep all my shots in the silhouette with the center shot out. It makes for a nice morning at the qualification range.

I have a Ohio Permit and Florida. Ohio is the Home State and I hide from Winter in Florida for Three Months. I’ve had both Permits so long I’m not about to drop One. Both were easy to renew and there is no listing of Guns on either Permit. I’m covered in every State I drive through. I don’t go to States I can’t carry in. I only carry Snub Revolvers but if I felt the need I could change things.

I could stick every gun I own in my car (if they would fit) have them all loaded and if a Leo pulled me over here in Montana, he couldn't even ask me to see a permit, check the serial numbers or anything else. Don't need no permit to carry in the car. ir is a extension of my domicile and unless he can see a plain view crime inside my vehicle he needs a warrant to search it.

Only thing I need a permit for is to carry concealed by my clothing outside my car in a town or village. State legislator passed a permit-less concealed carry law, but the governor we have vetoed it. But, he is done now. Term limits. BYE. Our permits are concealed weapon permits so it can be a gun, a knife or whatever. If you have a BATF stamp you could pack a concealed full auto Mac 10

So many states have surrendered so much of their rights and liberties.

Lots of tradeoffs where we live.

While Montanans spend winters in below zero weather trapped in the house freezing their butts of, we in CA can go the beach or hike in good weather.

And here, I can work (in Silicon Valley) with the smartest people in the world in my profession (computer engineering).

If I lived in Montana I'd be lucky to find some farmer who knew how to configure his printer.

However, at the moment I'm stuck in the house and everything is closed. So it doesn't matter where I live.

I guess I'm grumpy. Cabin fever.

I ran into a guy who put a 6" Super Blackhawk on his license. I think he lived in San Diego.

Someone from the sheriff's office called to ask him about it when processing his application.

It was approved.

Probably he was like you planning to hunt with it.

After reading this thread, I believe a quote from the "Beverly Hillbillies" applied in reverse is applicable. (...The kinfolks said "Jed, move away from here'...." You ought to look into the software companies at The Research Triangle Park near Raleigh, NC. Our gun laws are much better than what I just read. The weather is temperate. You can go west 1.5 hours and be in the mountains or east 2 hours and be at the coast. At your elbow are beautiful parks and lakes. I don't recruit for the state. It sells itself.

My CA permit limiting 3 DOES list each of the 3 (obviously) by model and serial #. I lived in Utah for several years and still carry a non resident permit from there. No restrictions and renews every 5 years instead of 2 (CA permit). The UT permit allows me more flexibility on road trips along with the CA permit.

I have a Utah non resident permit also. Utah does a great job of handling reciprocity relationships with other states.

I grew up in AZ and would consider moving there. I may get an AZ non resident permit also. It covers New Mexico, and Utah doesn't. Have some friends who just moved to NM I will visit some day.

I lived in AZ for a couple of years, many moons ago. I still visit often, friends & family. I have taken a look at Prescott, because I would love to get out of Commiefornia, but still not sold. One of my buddies just got a promotion and transfer to Texas (he has to be there by May7th), but its in Austin. Might as well stay in CA! Hard for me to decide what would be the right move for me from San Diego.

LOL we are smarter than you think. At least not dumb enough to put up with your rules or live in little cubes listening to our neighbors. Can't figure out how to work from remote location? Maybe I can find a farmer who can show you how. LOL Sorry just had to say that.

Not trapped in the house during winter, Snow mobiles, Ice fishing, hunting, skiing, coyote calling contests. Pool tourneys, chili cook offs, cinnamon roll cook offs, cribbage, spades, hearts, pinochle and bridge tournaments, 50 or 60 people get together for a trivia contest. Who wants to go to a beach with a million other people, then have to shower off the salt water, when you can to a nice trout stream and have a mile or so to yourself? I go to one of the hot springs and lay around in the hot water, Maybe 10 other people at a time in a 20x30 pool. $85-125 a night for a room. You can go for a hike here too, just walk a couple blocks down to the creek and follow one of the nice paths along it or follow one to one of the ponds. Probably see more deer than people. In the summer we load up our tubes and go a couple miles upstream and float home. My property taxes on an acre, a 1600sq ft house a 2000sq ft shop and my 400sq ft storage shed and 10x12 green house are horrible. Almost $2000 a year. Whats yours?

I lived in S Cal for most of 1973. I know about the smog burning off, sitting in my car not moving. Bad enough then. NO THANK YOU.

Though I am sure you enjoy it. It is NOT for me.

I did a 5500 mile loop up through AZ, CO, UT, ID, MT, WA, OR and back to Ca last summer. Loved Montana. Stayed in Missoula, Bigfork and Whitefish. I will take my motorcycle back this summer and explore MT some more. Glacier.

Where in MT are you, steelslaver?

I often conceal carry my S&W Model 66-2 with a 2 & 1/2" barrel in .357 Magnum. I have in the past concealed carry a S&W Model 42 Centennial. An easy to carry speed strip in my pocket provides extra rounds of ammunition.
