Model 10 Gunsmith Special
Anyone see the model 10 frames J&G sales has for sale? It’s a round butt frame with no barrel. I suspect since these guns originally had 2 inch barrels they are not legal for import.
Smith & Wesson 10 Revolver, 38 Special, No Barrel, Round Butt, GSS, CAI Mark, Used, S&W.
I ordered one out of curiosity and since I have a pretty rough 4 inch barrel and cylinder that would match the expected finish.
The one I got was a 10-7. Nothing worth taking a picture of, very rough and abused but not a lot of evidence of firing. If you didn’t already have extra parts I’m not sure if these would be worth it. The importer stamp is inconspicuously located under the trigger guard.
I screwed on my 4 inch barrel and threaded in the longer ejector rod and here’s what we have. For about $200 I don’t know if it’s good or bad. I really wanted a gun to try rust bluing and I think this will make a good candidate.

Hey, for $200 it looks pretty darn good to me. Be curious to see what it looks like completed.

I have 2 of these waiting for me at my FFL's. I ordered a 2" and a 5" barrel off Ebay. Once I get everything together, I'll put up some photos.

The only other part I want to put in it is an oversized cylinder stop to correct some of the side to side cylinder shake. Otherwise it seems okay, I was worried the frame would be bent, who knows how they take the barrels off, but it seems okay

Re: Gunsmith special
I'm with Tom, you made a good buy right there. I've got a cherry 10-5, and would be proud to fix that one of yours up. For many of us, safe queens just don't stoke our fire. I've got a few $35 .22's that will stuff a round up a fly's butt, which is the purpose, is it not? It's all about what makes each of us smile. Please show the final product.
Regards to all,
Bob

Over the years, I have rebuilt four frames, 2 1917s and 2 M13s. It helps to have a pile of parts. I may have to order a couple of these. Round butt K frames fit my paw quite well.

It would be a good project gun to build a 3 inch K frame, I have a thing for those.

I looked at those frames. My parts box has a barrel and cylinder for a S&W 64, I've never owned a pinto.

Me too! I just built this one out of a 10-8 round butt 4 inch. Swapped in a cylinder and barrel from a 13-3.
I would like to build a 3” model 10 but I can’t find a barrel for sale anywhere. Also this 10-7 frame is different than a 10-6 or 10-8. The top front part of the frame is more rounded for a pencil barrel. The profile of the heavy 3” or 4” barrel is off slightly.

I got one coming. I see a 3" barreled, bobbed hammer 357. Have a spare model 19 cylinder in my parts pile. Cut a barrel right in front of the lug. Long angled front sight, opened up square bottomed groove and squared back on frame

A 2" barrel can be had for about $60 + shipping on GB. Add that to $150 for the one in the OP's link + another $20 for a transfer you could have a decent M10 snubby shooter for less than $250 and a little work.

Yep. Pretty much what I'm doing. The 2" was $90, but the 5" cost me around $114. Since these frames were allegedly from 2" guns, I'll need a center pin and extractor rod for the 5" conversion, but I have those in the parts bin already. With the round butt, I think that's going to make a pretty nice shooter.

I ordered 2.
Does anyone know if the barrels were reimported? 4 inch tapered
bbls I've got but I would rather have 2" bbls. Numrich is out of
service at this time.
Also for standard 158gr lswc service loads what sight height
did 2" model 10's come with.

I assume a model 12 barrel will work? Pretty decent buy for a nice belly gun or truck gun

Got my 2 today. Both were carried a lot, never shot
foreign cop guns. Recoil shields were as new. Bone
dry with no burnishing on the inside. I hand tightened
a 4" barrel on one and it went to 20 degrees of top
dead center. Took about a hour with a needle file
to barrel it and another to adjust the center pin .
It runs good.
They have poorly stamped department serial
numbers on the frames forward of the triggergards.
The Century stamp is there also. Finish is good for
$170.00 guns. If she who must be obeyed would
let me, I'd get a couple more.

Mine shot good too but a few of the chambers are out of line when I check them with a range rod.
I’m not sure if I’m going to try to fit my other cylinder or let it go. I wanted to try to use this gun as a beginner rust blue project but I just can’t make up my mind yet. I already have 3 other K frame projects I’ve completed

I never thought to do that. I "assumed" the cylinder was ok
and the barrel was too. It shot fine, the ditch dirt clods broke
up and no lead was spit at the cylinder/barrel gap. I did do the
shine the light into the recoil shield cylinder gap and see if the
charge holes looked uniform with respect to the firing pin hole.
I need to quit being a Khyber Pass gunsmith and get a little lathe
and mill. Doing this stuff with Magic Markers, Glardon Valorbe
needle files, Sears Craftsman automotive feeler gages, 4"vice and
calibrated eyeball is a little primitive. A lot of fun but kinda crude.

I fixed my 10-7 gunsmith special with the original cylinder from the 10-8 I posted above. I didn't install it initially because the yoke face needed filed a little for the cylinder to close. Once you remove material from the yoke there's no going back.
The end result is all chambers pass the match range rod, it cleaned up all endshake and my cylinder side to side play is less. One ratchet tooth needs filed a little but otherwise the timing is perfect. Hopefully it shoots as good as it did before.
I don't have a mill or a lathe either and while I want one of each I'm not sure if I'll ever go past the point I'm at now. I have too many hobbies as it is

I shot wadcutters yesterday and the cylinder started to
drag on the forcing cone of the 4" barrel. I had to file a bit
to open it up. When I started the barrel cylinder gap was
.004". I opened it to just under .007' . Took it out today and
the ditch clods didn't have a chance. This has been more fun
than I thought possible.
I just wish the rocks would come out of the garden as easy
and fun.

A good guy with a file can do some real precision work. A klutz with a mill and a lathe can destroy stuff fast.
I got mine yesterday. Its a 10-7 and looks really good except for the stampings in front of tthe trigger guard. I am going to lightly peen that are well the use a small wheel attachment, with a wheel that matches the radius, on my industrial belt sander and smooth it out. I fount a 4" heavy barrel and longer ejector rod in the parts pile. Might just use them to start with. Maybe someday do something else with it.

If you zoom in on my pic a little you can tell the 4 inch heavy barrel doesn’t match up with the top contour of the 10-7 frame. It’s not very noticeable but someone with an eye for model 10s would spot it right away. I’ve been trying to decide if I want to leave my heavy barrel on or keep my eye open for another barrel configuration.

I believe pretty much any 1-piece, 38 special, K-frame barrel should fit. For any barrel longer than 2" I think you'll also need to replace the ejector rod in order for it to match up with the locking lug.

Just picked up my 10-7 with no barrel today. It’s in decent shape; about what I expected. Now the hunt begins for a barrel.

With its short ejector rod it's set up for a 2" barrel.

I picked a couple of these up a few weeks ago.
I found a 2" heavy barrel for one and dropped it off at the gunsmith this afternoon to be installed. I'm pretty good with a S&W double action, but the serious stuff I'll leave to the pros. If it shoots decently, I'll slick up the action, bob the hammer and maybe hard chrome it. I might even *gasp* Cerakote it.
I'd like to find a 3" barrel for number two... they seem to be pretty scarce at the moment. Maybe shorten and slab side a 4" heavy barrel? Who knows. Gonna see how #1 turns out first.

I had a .45 M1911 mix master Cerakoted a few years ago and it turned out really nice. I also have a Howa .243 that came Cerakoted in a grey color that looks really nice. I was actually thinking, if I get one of these, getting it Cerakoted, as there is no one in this area that does blueing and I don't really want to mail it anywhere.

Here’s mine, picked up this morning. That’s a lightweight barrel picked up from a member here. It was installed, and all new springs installed, along with stoning some internal parts by my gunsmith as my birthday gift from him.
I’ll probably keep on the lookout for a heavy barrel so it’s just right.

Finally got all my parts in, so I took the snubbie M10 out and got it dirty today.
It shoots well, though the action isn't anything to write home about. POI is a little low with the white box 130gr FMJ. Should be right on the money with 158gr ammo.
Now that I know it goes bang reliably, it's time to dig into the action. And I'll probably start looking for a barrel for number 2...

which Barrel?
I have one of these barrel less frames and nee some guidance on which k frame barrels will fit this frame. I like the 2" barrel but I cannot determine if another model will fit this frame. I am new to the Smith and Wesson revolver following and need to learn more. This will be a knock about gun so matching colors will not matter. I also need to source the extractor star as the one I have has a low spot on one cylinder. I appreciate and advise and help. Thank you in advance.

Any K-frame threaded barrel should physically screw on, "pinned" or not. The profiles of the barrels are different between light and heavy, and fixed or adjustable sight guns. AFAIK, all of these J&G guns will best match the 2", heavy, fixed sight profiles.
For anything other than a 2", you will also need the longer ejector rod and associated parts.
I finally finished my first one. I'll probably buy a 4" barrel for #2 and shorten it to 3"...

I would love to do one of these but it appears every 2" K frame barrel has been scrubbed from the internet 😂
There's also the fact that a local gunsmith who can do good, timely work is pretty much non existent.

I ended up selling my first one above, and am now working on #2. Picked up a 4" barrel for under $40 shipped off eBay, and got the longer ejector rod parts from Gun Parts.
Plan is to shorten to 3", probably slab side the barrel, new front sight and reblue. Will talk to the local 'smith shop after the Holidays.
