Waited 30 years for a 686
I’ve wanted a 686 for 30 years, looks like I finally got it, and it’s 30 years old, 686-3.

The frame that was designed around a cartridge. Not the other way around. K was too light and N was too heavy. But L was just right.

I love the grain on those stocks. She is a beauty. 686 / 586 are my favorites. I think they are one of the best guns out there. You will love shooting it smooth as silk.

IMO the -3's and -4's are the best 686's. My preference is the -3 too. Enjoy as it will last for many, many years.

I love me some 686. Both of mine are dash 1's. I sent the 2.5" in for the M stamp recall. Left the 4" as is.
Kinda wish I'd got the 4" 681 instead of the 686.

Great pick up. Congrats on it. I also went for a 4" barrel which I use in a 25 yard Service Match we shoot over here in Australia. Mine is a 686-1.

I have 10 of them in various configurations. They are my #1 competition gun. Shoot mostly .38 special or Short Colt. Built 2 of them into 646 .40 S&W with moon clips, one 4", one 6". The 686 is one of the best revolvers ever made by anyone.

That's awesome. 30 years is a long time to wait.
I recently sold my pristine LNIB 4" 686 no-dash. I never even shot it.
I also sold my 5" half-lug 686-6+.
I did however keep my 6" 686 no-dash. One of my favorite keepers.

Sorry to say, I don't own an L frame of any kind. A 6" 686 power port, I had back in the 90s, got sold after about a year of ownership, to buy something that I don't even remember at the moment.
At the time, it was fun to shoot, but served no real purpose. The limited funds of a 25 year old need to be used on things with purpose.
I have been eyeing up a like new 681 that a guy has been dragging to the local gun shows for a year or so. If the shows get rolling again, and he ever decides that it isn't made of some unknown precious metal, I might have my first L frame in 25 years, we'll see.

It turns out the 686-3 I just got is a late -3 and is marked 686-3, but has the -4 rear sight milled round.

It's been 20+ years since my last 686--we don't see too many here for sale. This one is a 6" 686-4 and the carry up and lock up is just excellent. Shortly after I bought this one I was able to get the Spegels shown here--Bolivian Rosewood, round to square butt conversions. Unfortunately with the pandemic going on, I haven't been able to take it to the range.
Regardless, I don't think I'm letting this one go anytime soon.

You chose well, I bought this one more than 35 years ago, a 686 no dash. Grips by Hogue in Pau Ferro. This entered many a PPC match and early action pistol matches, before I determined a 1911 was the only way to go.

Someone here will correct me if I am wrong, but I believe the -3's had rear sights that were milled round, like you said. The -4's and later look almost the same but are slightly shorter. The -3 rear sight can be tough to find if you need a replacement.
Wait, I'm thinking of the 629's, not 686's. I don't know if the same is true for them.

Here is my dash 1 it was unfired until my son in law came back from Afghanistan. He said you can't have a revolver that has not been fired, so I let I'm fire it first; then my daughter so now it has been fired a total of 24 times. 20191011_142342.jpg

I posted a picture earlier in the thread, post 19.
This is how my 6" 686 no-dash came to me wearing Hogue Monogrips and it was filthy.
It has a High Patridge front sight and a Millet rear sight.
My brother used it in silhouette competitions.
It has the nicest trigger of all my guns.
I can't even fathom how many rounds have gone thru it.

I bought a 686 no dash (has an "M" stamp) 4" local police issue recently. The rear sight is missing though. I'm not knowledgeable enough about these to find the right sight, as hard as I've tried...can anyone help? Thanks in advance.

Congratulation on your purchase!
My first revolver was a 686-3 6" barrel purchased 30 years ago. Smith & Wesson got it right on the L frame. It is in my opinion the perfect revolver and the apex of revolver development. Fits my hand perfectly and boy is it a tack driver. This is one revolver that I will never part with.
