Default 629-5 new to me

Just registered on the forum after picking up a new to me 629-4. Its a 3" and looks like it was made in 1999. I am wondering about a few things. Im planning on getting a letter on it from the S&WHF but in the meantime Im wondering if any of you guys can help me id some things on the gun. First off it has a ported barrel. Looks to be magnaport. Is there a way to know if this is factory or aftermarket? Also it does not have factory grips. They are from Altamont Company. They fit and look nice but Im wondering what came on the gun from the factory. Any help would be appreciated!

The grips are replacements, I believe that model should have come with (S&W) Hogue grips. I don't know much about ported barrels but I'm sure someone with more knowledge in that area will jump in.

Welcome to the Forum

In the 1990s-2000s there were LOTS of variations on the 3" 629

A 3" example of the 5th engineering revision of the Model 629 is not enough information to tell us what firearm you have

If you have the original box, there is a 6 digit product code on the label. That is what defines the factory configuration

Lacking a product code, posting some pictures would go a long way to determining what you have

Both of these 3" 629s are -5s

Both revolvers are wearing the correct factory supplied grips, but neither is Mag-Na-Ported

That is a Factory Mag-Na-Ported 629

That configuration was from just before the turn of the century.

Your revolver was manufactured on September 24th of 1999

That is product code 148719

I can not locate any mention of what grips it shipped with. Perhaps that information will be included with your Factory Historical letter

BTH, just because the grips were made by Altomonte does not mean they were not factory supplied

Altamonthe has provided grips to Smith & Wesson for years. My first revolver pictured above is wearing factory supplied Altamonte grips

Great info OldChief. Any idea how many of these were made in the 3” factory ported?
