Default S&W Model 27-2 4-inch

I found a S&W Model 27-2 4 inch revolver at COPS Gun Shop in Oklahoma City. The bluing looks great. The grips have some scratches on the bottom of them. The gun looks to be pretty good shape
And doesn’t look to be shot very much. I’ve always wanted one, but the price is $1000. I feel like this is pretty high. I don’t really see them other places. Does this seem high to you all or is it about right?

Buy it! 4” 27-2s were special order only and aren’t common. If in the condition you describe its well worth a grand.

These were regular production for a few years in the early 1980s and went from the -2 to the -3 (pinned/recessed, then -2 transitional guns with just the old-style cylinder, then neither feature with the -3). $1000 is in line for a nice example but feel free to offer less.

In the late 1970’s, S&W eliminated the 3-1/2” and 5” barrel options on the 27-2 and standardized on 4” barrels. 6” and 8-3/8” barrels were still offered. You’ll find some transitional guns with recessed chambers and non-pinned barrels. It seems that a lot of the 4” guns were nickel.

4” 27-2’s are not rare, but this barrel length was only offered for about 3 years. 6-1/2” 27-2’s are probably the rarest, but I’ll guess the 4” guns are a distant second.

ANIB examples can bring substantially more than $1000. A presentation case with tools and an excellent set of stocks will set you back about $400. I’m not sure I’d pay $1000 for the gun you describe, but it’s probably not too far out of line if you really want one.

I think I’d have a hard time replacing my 4” nickel for a grand.

I don't think I have ever seen a 4 inch blue 27-2! Two years ago I saw two nickel ones at the Tulsa gun show. One was priced at $1500, new in the box with paperwork. The other one was priced at $2200, also like new. The latter one had a red insert in the front sight. First one did not.
Just for some comparative information.

I snagged this one off a GS table about 4-5 months ago
in a trade deal. I have about $600.00 in it.
If I were to lay it on a GS table it would bring an EZ $1K.
27-2 nickel non-pinned barrel but with recessed cylinders.
It was wearing some very nice factory Targets which I
replaced with stags as I will hang onto this one.

Likely a 98% Smith..that is glare on the sideplate.

They are rare in any model before the 27-2; I think there were a few in the pre-27 era, and Registered Magnums of course.

You have received good info above. I am a collector of 27-2s with 4" barrels. My experience has been that blue 4" guns are "scarce" but nickel plated are much easier to find. I got my blue 4" by swapping one of my nickel 4" guns. There are some guns with pinned barrels or recessed cylinders but not both. They are "rare" but collectors don't really care.

Love the blue, but, the nickel has a warm place in my heart also.

It's all good.

Both four inchers.

enjoy,

Here is one of my favorite S&W’s, a 4” 27-2 from about 1980. It was my first pinned and recessed. I bought it off gunbroker in 2011 for $485 as it was an agency trade in and finish was worn in spots. It also had property number etched under the cylinder. I refinished grips and had an action job that smoothed it out but it then it had reduced main spring and return spring which I tired of. Then in 2015 sent to S&W for tightening up and refinishing and went back to original springs. S&W did a great job and even polished out the etched number. Then I added the Culina grips. So what started out as a $485 gun, I now have more than $1,000 in it, but I don’t regret it.

I recently sold my 1957 pre-27 4". I figured my M520 was good enough for a 4" N-frame .357 Magnum.

My only other 4" is my M58.

$1000 doesn't seem bad to me at all.

Paid $900 for this one about a year ago with a presentation box/tools; probably not "the" box though. $1000 for a nice one probably isn't out of line these days.

Well guys I really want to buy it, but I’m just not in a position that I can right now. If any of you all want it, it’s still for sale.

Sorry that you have to pass on it right now. Seems like a fair deal.

I went thru a lot of guns over the last two years and ended up keeping the ones I really like. I serious doubt that I will ever add to what I have today.

Someone is welcome to correct me on this if I am wrong.
It is my understanding that there were fewer 4” 27’s and pre 27’s produced than the vaunted 3 1/2” 27’s and pre 27’s.
The 3 1/2” guns still command a higher dollar though.

I got this one almost 10 years ago at the Orlando gunshow. A very sweaty handed dentist had it in a crumpled paper sack like a sammich. I said "What's fer lunch?" He pulled this out. "No condiments, either" as I counted out his cash. Joe

I bought a new 27-2 P&R in the blue cardboard box in 1980 at a gunshop that kind of specialized in the police business. It had 3Ts. Didn't know what I had; foolishly traded it away a couple of years later.
