I haven't camped in years. "Roughing it" for me is when the wifi at the resort goes out.

But I'm in the woods a lot, and I carry the same thing I'd carry if I was camping: a Ruger Redhawk, with full-tilt 240 gr. ammo.

"If something bad is coming at him I doubt that a few lost cases will be of great consequence"

Very true, but 99.999% of ammo expended while camping is not fired while something bad is coming at you.

Plus, how many rounds you get off is not nearly as important as the effectiveness of the ones that you do get off. 2 solid hits with 250 gr 45 colts beats 8 blazed away whatevers every time.

That's why they sell spare mags. You must be familiar with Horseshoe Lake.
But yes, experience taught me that sometimes, a five shot snubbie might just not be enough. I've grown up with blue steel and wood, but the Taurus PT92 is a very impressive device.

Always this one.

Model 25, .45 Colt.

Sometimes, often this one.

Marlin .45-70. I like big bores that don't have an overabundance of recoil but can handle most anything that comes up.

Better half is partial to this in a revolver.

She is also typically carrying a .22 LR rifle.

All depends on what you want to do.

For some people "camp gun" is more of a fun gun for plunking or targets of opportunity.

For some it's protection from two and/or four-legged beasts.

Since most of my "camping" is on property I own, my son & I usually have an arsenal. On my hip and at bedside is usually is a 4" Model 66-7 stoked with handloads of Remington 158 SJHP. Feral hogs & two-legged predators are my only concerns.

Nice gun. I could almost be talked in trading my mint condition 4" Model 29 for a brand new 4" Redhawk if I could get a an even trade deal, but I don't think that will happen. The new Redhawks go for close to $1,000 and my Model 29 won't get there.

Being here in Texas, I don't carry anything special for hiking, camping, etc. My usual edc firearms are sufficient.

A bunch of choices for me. If I aM at the ranch gonna be a 357. Either the 60-10 or 66 ND 2.5” bbl loaded with 158 fr magnums.
Same goes fo desert camping.
When I head to the pine forests, It will be the 4” 629 or 625-6 Mountian gun in 45 Colt.
I bought a 696 ND and figured it would be a great hiking and camp gun. NAh!! For the weight I may as well carry the 629 and have the extra round and magnum chambering.

These are my go-camping and fishin' guns, and an HK USP .45. Easy to pack and carry along with a knife, flashlight, fire, and water. And a flask for, ya know, snakebites. If I felt the need for more power I'd bring a 629 loaded with Garrett's 250 grain Hammerheads.
