3" Model 65 prices are crazy high!
I cannot believe what these are selling for as long as there is No IL. They Model 66 and 19 snubbies with a pinned barrels are selling for less. They are so expensive it would be much cheaper to buy a 4" and have it chopped. I saw one go for over $1200 last night and it didn't even have the original box. Crazy I say!

They are desirable as you know. I watched a Model 13 go for over 1300 last night myself. Makes me kick myself for not having cash ready for the last two sub, 700.00 65's and 13's i passed up. I'll not be making this mistake again.
Happy Hunting!!!

Yes, I should have bought earlier too... I don’t even watch them now, just moved on to other things. Plenty of others to buy.

I agree 100%. There are lots of revolvers & other firearms I find more desirable. Its desirable in itself but certainly not worth more than $500-$600 based on what it actually is.

Amazing, yet I'm not surprised. I prefer stainless, but no 65s in a sane price range could be found. I ended up buying a 3" 13-3 for a somewhat reasonable $700

I agree there are better more desirable firearms out there but in my case, i found that i adore the 13 and 65 more than any others. I don't know why they just feel right and shoot better for me.
I enjoy the hunt as much or more than the actual owning part so its all fun!

$1200-1300 buys a lot of gun, even where I'm at.
I'm more of an opportunist, rather than a collector, so I can wait on my next 13/64/65 3". I've had them before, someone always wanted them more than me.
For now, this will do me just fine--thanks to fide686 for the cocobolo Ahrends!

I rarely buy on GB but I am what I call a 'chronic watcher'. I mostly watch the same or variations of the Smiths I own to keep up with current values. I have, according to me, some really nice stuff but my 3" 65-3 is winning the race in the price paid/todays hammer prices race.

Bought my first 3" 65 in 1986/87 for about $250; another about 15 years ago..... great concealed carry revolvers..... or open carry in Penn's Woods.
Thou to be honest I tend to carry a 3" 66 more often....just for the COooool factor!!!!! or a 3" 60-10 .357 cus it's smaller and lighter and I don't plan on shooting

Kudos for 3" Model 65
I own but one of these gems. Had I known they would someday be worth a king's ransom, I wouldn't have passed up on another that was part of an estate.

Yes they are expensive - especially for a great vintage model with the accoutrements. That said, (and this is just my own opinion) they are worth what ever they cost. Just look at all the qualities and things you are getting: Forged! NO I/L! No barrel insert! Tighter tolerances. NO MIM. Hammer mounted Firing Pin (at least that is my preference). Last but certainly not least - the vintage models are much better quality IMHO.
As much as you will be paying a premium for one - you should also get a premium when you sell it! With care and common sense it will last a few lifetimes!
Another option is to look at a vintage M65 with a 3" bbl. The only real difference is that you don't get the barrel under-lug and no adjustable sights - but if you intend on CCW this gun, the fixed sights are actually more desirable IMO. You could probably save yourself $500 - $600 on the purchase.

I’m lucky I’m not in the 3” love fest. If I was, your idea of cutting a unloved 4” would be a thing. And round butting too.

Gunbroker can be convenient, but places the buyer in competition with other enthusiasts all over the country.
This 65-5 was in a pawn shop in Bangor, Maine a couple of years ago. Seller would not budge from the selling price of $450. Left it there, then got on this forum was advised that the price was really pretty good for that time, and that the gun would likely be gone by the time I went back to the pawn shop. It wasn't.
I go round and round about which stocks to keep on it. (It's like Barbies for guys, ain't it)? So far Pachmayr rubber compacts provide the most control and least pain with full house 158's, but they aren't as pretty. Found the K bananas in the back room of a tack shop in Cody, Wyoming last year, along with a set of K Combats. Asked the shop owner how much he wanted for both stock sets, and paid it without question or negotiation. Won't say how much as the statute of limitations hasn't run out yet. Let's just say it pays to look around outside of obvoius venues.

Nitpick here: Both the Lady Smith and the Hunter Smith 65's have ejector rod shrouds.
Still expensive. LOL
Adios,

Got my 65 just before Christmas last year for just under 600 and considered myself blessed! Hard to find around here is an understatement.

I’ve been buying what I can find. I have a -3, -5 and a -5 ladysmith. Then I have my 64-5 that I converted to 3 inch 357 and a 10-8 that I converted also.
The plain 65-5 cost me the most but I am a sucker for the case hardened hammer and trigger. I recently passed on a 65-6 three inch for $500. I already have too many

What I find amazing is, when these were first offered my S&W dealers could not give them away.
I've owned a number of 3" model 13,65's, and one 66, none of them felt right in my hand. Now the 2 1/2" model 19/66's Work Well for me.

I picked up my 65-5 back in 2012 from SOSS for the princely sum of $339. I figure it's worth at least twice that now.
I also have a 64-5 that was re-barreled in 2012. It was a round-butt 4" heavy barrel originally that cost around $250, and I found a 3" barrel on-line for $165. I picked up the barrel before finding the 65, but I went ahead and had it done anyway. Even as a frankengun, I still value it around $550.
Finally, I have a round-butt Model 10-10 that was one of the repatriated Australian guns from Bud's. A short while back, I picked up a 3" blued barrel on-line. When I finally took it to the gunsmith with the 10, he discovered that the barrel was really for a .357, even though it was marked ".38 Special." He put it together with a recessed .357 cylinder he had in his parts drawer and it worked perfectly, so now I have a 3" model "10/13" to round out my K-3's. All together I think I have around $450 or so in it, but I don't think I'd go below $600 for it.
Almost forgot: I have a couple of those $149 barrel-less K-frames from J&G waiting at my FFL, and a pair of barrels in my drawer ready to put on them. I think I'm obsessed....

Always liked the Model 65's both 3" and 4". When I get tempted, I look at my 681M and my 686-4 7 shot 2.5" and ask myself WHY??? Add to the equation a 4" 686-4 and I really CAN'T justify another .357

I can’t CC a K frame so it would be a house and car gun.
Might as well have a 3 inch 7 shooter 686.
3 inchers are just damn cool. But not my bag. Took me one J, one 65 and a 66 to confirm. I shared the love. Snub or 3” semi for me

I took one of my extra 3" 65-5's to a gunshow last year. I was told by one of the "experts" that even with the 3" barrel, a 65 was a $300 gun. I told him I'd buy everyone I could find for $300.

You have to really watch GB. Look at the bidders. So many of the over priced hammer bid are run up by bidders with NR as feedback.

And the"experts" like to use the 'blue book' too. I landed a 3" 66-4 thanks to a greedy dealer who told the private seller that there would be little profit if he were to buy and resell. He could have doubled his money. But I'm happy that he messed up.

I became a police officer in 1976. In the 1980's I had several opportunities to buy three inch model 64's and 65's. The problem at the time, was with the examples that I saw for sale; had a gap between the yoke and the frame, reminiscent of the gap in my front teeth. I don't know what was up during that time period. I had other Smiths without that issue. Otherwise I've always wanted one. That ship has sailed. If I had the opportunity to buy one now without the gap issue, for a fair price, I would buy it.

When I visited my LGS last Tuesday the cupboard was bare so I am not surprised to see higher prices. I've never seen the gun case so empty. The owner told me since the pandemic they have sold the **** out of everything and its taking longer than usual to get restocked. Most of their distributors are 4 week behind on filling in orders. I have probably purchased over 50 handguns over the past 12 from this LGS so he sold me a Smith and Wesson 327 2 inch for $1,200 including tax. MSRP on this revolver is $1,324.

Hey, I thought stainless guns had stainless hammers and triggers. Looks like your’s doesn’t. That’s a real big bonus as far as I’m concerned. I’m obviously no expert, but what’s the story on that?
I have a 90% 3” 13-3 I got for $375 that I think is the perfect defense K frame. Or any frame for a carry gun.

The M65-5's came from the factory with color case triggers and hammers. Quite a few M65 owners seem to prefer the -5's for that reason.

I like 65's. Both of mine are -2.
I have the 3" 64, and 66 too. Need a 3" 10 and 13 to keep them company.

Ya know scout II, the picture looks a little odd with that lonely M19 down in the corner. I think you need a couple more

I purchased my first 65 3" as a police trade in that CDNN IIRC was selling after beadblasting them. I loved that revolver but sold during the time, as many others, when we found out my wife had a brain tumor. As time went on and prices climbed and I could only lust after one. An acquaintance of mine has 3 and many conversations never availed him releasing a hold on one. A friend also had one he bought new and had not fired more than a box of ammo through. Now him being a friend he and I were always going back and forth about it. One day we were shooting and I had a Sig m11 I had traded into and swapped springs on and did a t/a job on. Friend falls in love with it, as we both were shooting exceptional with it. A few weeks go by and I get a message to call him when I had a chance. I called my friend that evening and he had a proposal that made me lighten up with joy. We both knew our guns were worth more than what we had in them but we are friends. Next day we meet up and swap pistols and talked before going shooting. In the end I have a lnib 65 3", box and papers, a couple speed loaders and pouch that I'm afraid to carry but I do have one of grail revolvers! Now to find a set of banana grips, or get some Ahrends or some other makers version. Me loves the Smith 3" revolvers. I'll get pics of it too so no one can say it's not real lol.

I would have laughed until I cried right there in his face.

This is a prime example of the economic rule of supply and demand. S&W never supplied enough to satisfy demand, so the 3 inch K-frames command a premium price.
