Hi Guys, I just got a stainless model 64-5 from Aim Surplus that is in pretty nice condition. I have 2 questions:
Serial # CAS44XX what is the date of mfg.?
It has CYA inscribed on the frame, does anybody know what department that came from? Thanks and can't wait to go shoot it.
My first ever gun is a Ruger Police Service Six that I got in 1981. It is amazing how close it is to the S&W 64. Both guns will still be around in 200 years!

Probably 1996, going by similar three letter codes in The Book. We like pics here, if you want to show us both of them.

I believe CYA stands for California Youth Authority. Could be mistaken. There are lots of 64s out there with that stamping (under the cylinder window, left side of frame?).

I myself just got one from AIM Surplus, too.
4 inch barrel.
I did some digging as to what the CYA was, and found out it is from the Correctional Youth Authority out of California.
Did yours come.with the factory wood, or Uncle Mike´s black oversized grips.
Mine came with the Black oversized rubber grips.

Here is a pic showing my Ruger Police Service Six next to the Model 64-5. Pretty amazing how close they duplicate each other.
I bought the Ruger in 1981 when I worked for the local sheriff's purchasing department. He let me add mine to the department's order at $200 cost which I thought was pretty neat for a 22 year old young man. He also deputized me so I could legally carry it in Tenn. No CCW at the time.

Hey Matt, haven't taken the grips off to find out yet!

Ruger took what worked from S&W along with Colt, and he did his casting, and made the control group separate to cut down on cost.
The Ruger S6 was made like a tank, and is still going strong, from what yours looks like. I´m not sure why Ruger had to "improve" the S6.
The Model 64 is plenty sturdy in itself.
I finally cleaned mine, and found that the bore is quite tight. I only have a 9mm cleaning kit, and the 9mm wire brush even had a hard time going through it.
Plus, I don´t think it had any copper cup and core bullets go through it, either.
I found mine to be a round butt under the grips.

Picked up my 64-5 from AIM today. 4" heavy barrel, CAN prefix, maybe 1996. CYA on left side: California Youth Authority - or, as I told the guy at the transfer store, maybe Cover Your ###. Round butt. Really dirty, needs a heavy clean, but looks overall in nice shape. Ugly rubber grips.

I´ve had mine for about 2 months now, and its a beauty of a revolver. Mine was as dirty, but she cleaned up extremely well.
Yes, the black grips aren't a thing of beauty, but for my big paws, they work perfectly.
I´ve been debating with myself if I want to mirror polish her or not.
