Default Source for OEM mainspring for 617-1?

Recently bought a 1996 617-1 and have really enjoyed shooting it. I thought someone may have replaced the original springs with an aftermarket kit as the trigger was the lightest of any Smith I have owned.

Through several hundred rounds no issues but last time out firing DA action some failures to fire. This was with CCI std. Vel. Trying the rounds that did not fire in SA mode all fired.

Between reliability and a lighter than normal trigger I'll take the reliability. Where is a good source to get an original mainspring for my 617-1? Would Smith still have these available?

Yes, if it's not in stock they will order it for you. Give Customer Service a call.

You might check the strain screw for tightness. I don't ever recall a problem with an original main spring. In more recent times, I have seen the "ribbed" type mainspring in factory original guns, (A Pro Series 986 and a 617-6). They should be available from the factory or any of the parts suppliers like Brownells and Midway.

Yes, before you do anything else, OP check the strain screw for tightness. It may have come loose. Happened to me on my 686 a month ago. Started having FTFs. Tightened the strain screw back up, and 100% ever since.

Also, take a fired small primer and the anvil side against the screw and the flat side against the spring. Gives you more torque/distance on the screw. Should make it GTG......Ands its free!
