Default Trigger not returning all the way

Hi!

I have newly bought a 629-2 with a 6" barrel.
On the range I had a squib load and had to use a rod and a hammer to get the bullet out.

After that the trigger when in DA does not return all the way.
When I then cock the hammer back, the trigger returns.

In SA the trigger returns all the way back again.

I did open the gun and inspect the parts, but I do not know what to look for, and only see that the trigger is stuck and needs a little bit of force to return.

What can the problem be? What should I look for?

Gun is clean with just a very light touch of oil?Did you remove and clean the rebound slide. Any chance someone cut a coil or so off the rebound slide spring? Can't quite see how knocking a squib out would mess up the action. Was the hammer was in home position while doing so?

I would take the side plate off again and flush out (gun scrub brake clean or WD-40 will work, (as a cleaner only not as lube) and blow out with air if possible. Very lightly oil. If that fails then I would replace rebound spring as stated above.

I'm betting on a cut coil or a very light (13# or less) rebound spring installed. If the trigger pull is light I'd also inspect the mainspring.

It takes more than a coil or two to cause a failure to return the trigger on an otherwise correctly functioning Smith! But, that is one place to look. Put in a new spring and test.

I had that problem with a Model 64. The trigger would not return in double action mode.

I used a needle-point oiler and injected BreakFree into the rebound spring housing, liberally. A day later the problem was gone. Must have been some crud in there.

Hi!

The gun worked perfectly before I removed the bullet. I did clean and lubricate, but the same problem. I try to replace the rebound spring.

My guess is that you may have inadvertently put some force on the hammer when knocking out the squib. Look for a tweaked or bent hammer stud.
