So did i do wrong?
I just aquired a mod. 317 in 22 lr. I liked it, and i wanted a revolver for practice, plinking and light fieldshooting. In Norway this goes in the "special revolver class"
Serial is CXD7638
In fine condition, not fired that many rounds.

Production year?
And if someone likes it i would love to hear

I am a fan of the little 317, though I have a 2" that I acquired when they firs came out

I also changed the grips on mine

Do you have the box that your revolver came in? If so, the Date of Manufacture is on the end label usually in code. Post a picture if you have one

It appears to be from 2005 according to the SN prefix. It is probably a 317-1 (without the internal lock)?

If you like and shoot it well, I'd say you made a good decision. Enjoy!

Looks good! I have an early 2" 317, love it.

I like mine; 3” 317-1’s. Different product codes but only difference is grips, IIRC.

Love the J frame 22 Kit guns !

On a side note always thought it was interesting that while J frame .38s were normally found as fixed site guns with target site equipped guns being made as the minority.... the J frame 22 is the exact opposite.

No, it is not possible to put a 22 Mag cylinder into this revolver or to rechamber the existing cylinder to 22 Magnum. The 22LR case heads touch because there are eight of them, 22 Magnum case heads are bigger

The 6 shot Models 34, 51, 63 and 651 can all have interchangeable cylinders for double duty

I am working on my new Model 617 as convertible right now. I have already ordered a second cylinder for it

I ran across a comment on a gun board that asserted that "the modern hypervelocity loadings in 22lr get pretty close to 22 Mag ballistics" anyway.

Any truth to that?

I had to buy 2 317's in order to keep one... my wife immediately adopted the 1st one. Mine has traveled a few thousand miles w/ me, fed me, tamed rattlesnakes & ended the careers of packrats, etc..

Not at all

As technology advanced the 22 LR cartridge, those same advancements were applied to the 22 Magnum

I had one of the 3” pre-lock 317’s. I loved it. I know it isn’t true but I swear the holster weighed more than the gun!
I sold it in a fit of the stupids and have been looking for the right deal on another.
You will love it.

My only problem with the one I own is that it's just too light. Unless you keep it loaded, you can lose it easily...

Unless the word SPECIAL appears under FEATURES on the label, the 4 digit number under the "SPEC ORD" heading is the date of manufacture

The first digit is the last digit of the year of manufacture. So you need to know the decade we are looking at. Since your serial number started with LGTxxxx I knew this was a 1990s gun.

The remaining three digits are the day of manufacture in Julian format

So your box says the 070th day of a year that ends in 7

Thank you colt_saa. Jumbo Sports quit selling handguns in their northern stores and shipped the inventory down south. I walked into the Stone Mountain location to buy some ammo and the S&W 317 was sitting on the counter to be entered into the books. I reached over the counter, grabbed a stool, and sat there and waited on it.

Put a cell phone lanyard on it, like I did mine.

Purely a coincidence but my wife’s 317 SN starts with CTD and that’s her initials. At one time I was a supplier for the Tenn Valley Authority (TVA). I bought a model 2206 during that time and the serial number began with TVA.

According to the internet all handgun purchases in Norway have to be for target shooting but I didn't see anything about the class for small revolvers being easier or harder to legally own. And sometimes the internet is full of bad information. I am curious how significant the classification is.

The 317 should be a fun gun but I find the larger 22s easier to shoot well. I hope you enjoy your new gun. I have both a very accurate, large and heavy S&W 41 and a light and compact S&W M&P 22 compact. While the 41 is much more accurate and easy to shoot well the 22 compact can be just as much fun. I just have to use larger targets with the small gun.

Well heck, I might as well chime in! Not sure how many of the
1 7/8", 8 shot, adjustable sight, pre-lock 317-1s were made, but I know where one is! Figured I might as well include a picture of her "bigger" sister.....

p.s. - I will buy ALL of these I can!!!

Correct, there must be a type of competition to put the revolver in. This special revolver must not have an overall lenght of 20cm.
To own and use pistols/revolvers in Norway, you must be a member of a shooting club. And there must be a competition program to put the weapons in.
Collectors not same rules. A collector must specify what he wants to collect, and them he can by weapons inside his field.
Hunters no problems, they can buy several types of rifles, but must specify what to use it for...
There are lots of guns in Norway, also many not registrated that has been in privat property after ww2.

I’ve owned a 317 off and on for 25 years.
Really wish I had kept my no lock snub nose.

I have a 317 kit gun like yours now and plan to keep it.
At 25 yards you could bag a squirrel for dinner, and it’s loads of fun to plink with.
