I'm trying to decide which of my two J-frames to keep. There's just one of me (wife never carries anymore) and I have K-frames in 2,3 and 4 inch iterations.

Got a 60-7 and a 60-9. Here are a couple photos.

60-7 has some sentimental value and a story, 60-9 is newer and more versatile.

Which one would you unload?

60-9 would have to go before the 60-7 all day everyday. I think, but not sure that the -7 has a plus p rating also, and no lawyer lock. I am biased, because I have a 60-7 as my everyday carry. Just my .02 cents worth.

60-7 is rated for +P

I'd keep the 60-9. It's a 357 Magnum, and also has no lock.

There aren't many no lock 357 mag m60s around.

I would keep the J-Magnum Model 60 with the -9 engineering revision without hesitation

I switched to carrying a J-Magnum as soon as they were released. These are VERY strong little revolvers

HOWEVER, if you have no pressing need for the cash, and no pressing need for the space where it is stored, I would just keep it until one of those two events occurs. Either firearm will be worth more money down the road

Keep the .357. Unless you feel .38 +P is sufficient. Then keep the one you like best.

Neither is easy to find. I’d keep one, and use the other as a backup.

One has sentimental value, keep it for that reason alone. You can't replace sentimental value. The other is more versatile... why sell either unless you're in desperate straits?

Neither, as I can almost assure you, you'll regret it.

I would unload the -9 without hesitation.

My 60-7 has done a lot of things with me, so I would never unload it.

The -7 has the classic j frame lines.

And I have become smart enough to realize that 357's out of a J frame suck immensely. The juice is not worth the squeeze.

I keep my 642 on the bike, however I MUCH prefer my Kimber K6S snub. I am sorry to have to "jump ship" but this thing is a 6-shot, .357 capable, revolver at just 23oz. I have never used .357 in it and stayed with .38+P... and all I can say is WOW! Totally worth my personal investment. Love the trigger... smooth and accurate.

If S&W comes out with a similar one, THEN I AM ALL IN! ...Waiting!... BTW, got bigger guns for different needs...

You folks bring up all the things I ponder about.

The 60-9 is the better choice because of its strength and ammo versatility.

The 60-7 looks nicer, is a bit lighter and has some personal value to me. And I wouldn't normally carry .357 loads in the 60-9, so the only advantage is that I could use them if that were the only thing available.

I don't need the cash to help pay the mortgage (already paid off years ago) or anything else for that matter, but I must admit we have been on a "get rid of stuff we don't need" kick here recently with all the extra time we have. And believe me, we have a lot of stuff we don't need! I have always been a fan of the KISS (keep it simple, stupid) principle as well.

You mention you have k frames and I’m guessing at least one is in .357. If so that’s more versatile than the -9 so sell the -9. You can’t replace sentimental.

I shot magnums in a j once. I didn’t think it was very versatile after that.

Hope one of your 60`s gets reconsidered as to the "get rid of cut".
Both would be off that list to me because of their value. You do not need to sell for financial reasons, as you stated.

Personally, unless I needed the dough, I'd carry the -9 w/ +P spl's, & keep the -7 for backup / special occasions.

Due to space considerations I also like to keep my guns to a reasonable number.

A few years ago I sold several Smith's... a friend asked the question "How much room did they actually take up?"

For rifles & shotguns I NOW think it is good to thin the belongings, But J-Frames no longer get sold.

id keep the 60-7 its the pre change in manufacturing processes we'll call it. its built more solid and will hold its value in the collector market much better in the long run

Since you never mentioned selling, send the -9 to me for safe keeping.

As you can see from the multitude of responses, this question can only be answered by you! The rest of us can only offer suggestions based on our own perspectives and biases.

As for providing input, I prefer smaller for concealed carry and since you have K-frames for more power, and since you have history with the -7, the arguments pile up on the side of selling the -9, from my point of view. But again, this is your very personal choice to make.

Keep both. If you sell one your going to kick yourself latter. Unless you need the money and have no other way to get it. Hide it in back of the safe or some secure area. Forgetaboutit. Someday you will think I need another or you will miss it. In my case One for the off hand pocket and One for the waist.

I sold the 60-9 yesterday for a fair price. Less is more at my age. Particularly with handguns I think. KISS principle is the rule around here from now on!

Seriously, I'm not going to carry a J with magnum ammunition, it was heavier than the 60-7 and the trigger was not quite as nice.

I've sold and traded many a Smith and Wesson and regretted parting with a few of them but, again, the older I get the less I miss them. One of the few I wish I had kept was this Victory.

But that's another story.

They don't take up much storage space and you will probably regret selling either one in the future. Keep both, if you can. If I only was to keep one it would be the .357.

Oh wow! I just started looking into buying a K6S! I watched almost all the YouTube reviews, just need to go look for one and feel it in my hand. Beautiful little piece! My only setback is, I already have a Ruger SP101 2.5in 357. But the Kimber keeps calling me.
OP, I would keep the -7 since, to me, the -9 is pretty close to a K frame. Plus I love model 60s. I have two 60-7s, the best model, imho.

(the internet 480 guy says flat out nobody can really handle .44 et al, or a .357 in a small frame. I will shoot .357 out of my 586 ((winner: best gun of all time)) for practice, but it's loaded in .38 +P 24/7...and my beloved 36-2 with the tgrip and 3" barrel isn't even rated for +P.

(not to dally you, but I guess my take is how did you come to put yourself in this bind? lose the mag because it's not really what it seems to be. you rub-up against very few angry bears, hippos or Samoans these days.

I say keep the -7 . . . it looks better. But I don't know how these guns feel in YOUR hands. If the -9 feels better, keep it.

The old saw of "Two is one and one is none." comes to mind. Unless you REALLY need the money, keep them both.

Tough choice. I have a 60 no dash I bought through the Detroit Police Commissioners office, while a PO there in ‘73. $100. Removed the hammer spur and carried it concealed through 35 yrs of police work. Still have it and it’s not leaving. Good luck with your decision.

Keep the sentimental one. Although 357 is versatile how often do you do it realistically?

IMHO the 60-7 is the BEST Chief's Special EVER MADE! Just my opinion of course!

I've got the same pair, as my only J frames. I much prefer the 60-7. I've been meaning to trade or sell the -9 for something more interesting and diverse, a 32, a 3in, an weight, or at least a hammerless.

Really, if you even think you'll regret the loss, (you absolutely will).

It's a J Frame revolver, how much room does it take up? (Pretty much none).

If you don't need the money, and it only takes up as much space as a box of bandaids, ????

I've never seen or held either one so I can't help you there.

I have 3 J-frames.
A 1995 640-1 .357. The first gun I ever bought.
A 2008 642-1 .38 Spl +P that my brother carried as his backup for 6 years.
And a 2017 60-14 .357 mag Lady Smith that has yet to be fired since leaving the factory.



IF!! I could only keep one it would have to be the 642-1 for sentimental reasons.

It has been my EDC for 6 years now but I might be replacing it with a new M&P .45 Shield M2.0 that I ordered a couple of weeks ago and I'm still waiting fir it to arrive.

I'll have to see how I like it and how nice it is to carry.

Keep the 38SPL and sell the 357MAG, but not to a good friend. Why did S&W think magnumizing a "J" or "K" frame sized gun was a good idea?

I have a total of 4 J-frames at the moment., including my old M60 N/D iI bought for back-up/off-duty in the 70's. From the sentimental standpoint, it's not going anywhere. I have a 340M&P that is a great carry piece with magnum capability (but it hurts), a 640 Pro Series (also magnum capable) and an old M36 N/D given to me by an old partner that he carried as a back-up for many years. I can't say I'd voluntarily part with any of them. Each has it's own utility or sentimental reason for holding on to it. I don't think I'd let either go, were I you, but then I see you already have.
