My 629 DX
Hello. New to the forum. As one who is used to seeing everything I've ever bought go down in value I was recently suprised when I started doing some research on a gun I was considering selling. Paid $537 for this 6 1/2 inch 629-3 Classic DX in 1992. Was fortunate enough to keep track of everything that came with the gun including the box (like new condition), both sets of grips, the test target, all the front sights and all the paperwork. The leupold scope/rings/base I put on myself. Rear sight still in the box. The gun is still in excellent condition with less than 200 rounds through it. Happy to see that these guns have finally caught the attention of the collector crowd. Not sure if I could part with the gun but I would be curious of the current value.
As a side note, I'd like to hear from you guys about the accuracy you've achieved with your 629's. Mine is amazingly accurate. My best 50 yard 5-shot group (with scope) was 0.70 inches. Shot a 100 yard 5-shot group of 2.04 inches.

I have an 8-3/8 one I use for Metallic Silhouette. It will shoot 5 to 6 inch groups at 200 meters. Better as you get closer. I will not part with mine.

If it helps, those N Frame combat grips/stocks on your gun could probably bring $350-$400 alone. Really nice revolver. I had one years ago and sold it; used it for deer hunting.

Used mine to take a nice doe shortly after I bought it. Hard to believe the grips alone could be worth that much. Like I said, I didn't pay much over $500 for the gun when new.

Nice. When I went hunting with my DX, the deer were always at distance and I used a 30-06. I can shoot paper and targets at distance, but won't take a couple hundred yard shot deer hunting, because for me it is not ethical because I personally cannot guarantee the shot and don't want the critters to suffer (with revolver @ 200 yds).
Your $500 back then, in today's dollars with inflation is around $ 913.00 in value according to an online calculator. This is fairly commensurate with the gun value now; that is, my guess would be a $900-$1,000 (upper end being if you had all the accessories in perfect shape, etc.). The wild card is the value of the grips. The figuring on yours are really nice and a collector would pay a premium for them alone.
Good luck and welcome to the forum. TH

Welcome to the forum. Very nice gun. Below in my classic DX model 29-5 with a 5" bbl. I too have all the goodies that came with it. I think mine was test dated in 8/92. I bought it new in early 94. Got tired of looking at it on the shelf. The S&W bible says 5" bbls are a 50% premium. I might think a bit more, simply because I think they are scarce. I have never seen another one

Maybe just a matter of a bidding war between a couple guys but a Gunbroker auction recently had 3 different bidders willing to pay over $1,350 for a gun identical to mine but missing the rubber grips and with no scope. Gun ended up at a bit over $1,400 plus shipping. Not python prices but still......

Not trying to get off topic; but yes, 5" is desirable and of interest. 3", 5" and custom factory orders, for which I am still learning. That is the great thing about our hobby, you can never say always or never.

Realistically, with yours being in great shape and with the box and goodies I'd put that in the $1000 - $1200 range W/O the scope. I'd sell that separately for no less than $200. Leupold stopped making the 2x M8.
You may get lucky and bring a higher price if you put it on GB with a lot of good pics. I paid $900 for my 8 3/8" dash 3 DX a few years ago. Wonderful trigger and very accurate gun.

The Classic DX, IMO, may be one of the best revolvers produced by S&W. My acquisition included the box, documents, all front sight inserts but, no target and only the rubber grips. It is a 629-5 and may not have come with the target and combat grips.
I added the Hogue, wooden grips a couple of years ago. I have taken a 5pt. buck with this one and it gets a lot of hunting opportunities. A great shooter and extremely accurate.
Get yours today!
I added a photo of one of my best targets with this revolver. Fired standing, two handed hold, single action at 25 yards.
