new guy question...
Hi All,
I'm a green horn with my first question......
Recently, I inherited a Model 10-7 snubbie. I read about the different frames, K, J etc. What is mine?

Welcome to the forum. You have a K frame. If you can post the serial number (use xx for the last 2 numbers if you don't want to reveal all of it) someone will be along to give you an approximate ship date.
I had a nickel snub once upon a time!
Pics would be good too!!

Welcome, and congrats on the Model 10. It's the quintessential thirty-eight in my book. Here's my well-worn 10-6.

Here is my 10-5 snubby on the left. Just a little older than yours.
It was carried by a lot of plain cloths cops and federal agents.
On the right is a 10-6 with 4" bull barrel, carried by many uniform
officers.
2nd from left is my 10-5 after dressing it up with some Grasshorn grips,
and the (kinda) matching Puma Prince knife.
3rd from left is my 10-5 in it's favorite ride. An RSS (Revolver Super Speed) by Ken Null.
Your 10-7 snubby is a fine revolver. You will enjoy it. And welcome to
the forum.

Here is kind of a brief summing up of the frames
I am sure it is not complete or perfect
M frame. By far the smallest swing out cylinder. 22 long only. Blue and nickel only. Seldom seen and has not been produced for a long time
I frame. Blue and nickel only. 6 shot 22 and 32 S&W long, 5 shot 38 S&W. No longer produced, replace by J frame after some over lap. Same basic frame size as the J frame, except for a slightly smaller grip frame and a shorter cylinder. Used a leaf main spring then last models a coil spring.
J frame. Started 1950. Smallest currently in production. Blue, nickel, aluminum, Scandium and stainless. 6 shot 22, 32 S&W long, 32 H&R and 327 Federal. 5 shot 38 S&W (out of production for some time) 38 special and 357. I think used coil spring only.
K frame. Began in 1899. Blue, nickel, aluminum alloy, scandium and stainless models.originally all 6 shot. 22, 32 long and 32H&R mag, 38 special, 357 mag. 8 shot 22 lr now available. At one time also in 32-20 also known and marked as 32 Winchester
L frame. Didn't appear till 1980. Blue Nickel and Stainless, Scandium. 6 & 7 shot 357 mag, 5 shot 44 special, 44 mag.
N frame. Started in 1908 with the "Triple lock" in 44 special, Blue, Nickel, Stainless, Scandium. 6 shot. 38special, 357 mag (now 8 shot models available), 41 mag, 44 special, 44 mag and 45 acp and colt.
X frame, Stainless only. 5 shot 460 and 500 magnums. Very large and heavy revolver. Currently most powerful high production revolvers. The 460 models also fire 45 colt and 454 Casul rounds.
Z frame. Stainless 6 shot with extra long frame and cylinder so it will chamber and fire 4 1/2" 410 shotshells as well as 45 acp. 45 colt
Cylinder diameters will tell you frame size
J frame 1.306"
K frame 1.446"
L frame 1.559"
N frame 1.710"
X frame 1.918"
Z frame 1.750"

There are a few odd ball calibers missing, Like the 22 Jet a K frame firing a 357 case necked down to 22, Think the factory did a few 22 Harvey Kay Chucks, another 22 wildcat. Also some 9mm revolvers in J,K, and N frames/ A few 10mm guns, I think all in N frames. They even made a very few in 30 carbine.

Ok guys,
Now my head hurts from all of the great response and information.
I'm a mentor (of sorts) on a Vintage Mustang (vehicle) forum and motorbikes and scooters and realize many times how redundant some questions can be. I appreciate your patience and warm welcome. Also, know I don't own this "snubbie" without a pic. I'll validate my ownership shortly. Think safe, Be safe!

Mine (10-7) came with the same grips. But, but my Dad, changed them for Hogues. Does add a bit of better feel and control.

A hearty Buckeye welcome from NE Ohio!
I carried Model 10s on duty and 15s, and 19s. As long as they could chamber the 38 S&W Special cartridge my department was happy.
I still have an older M&P 38 Special with a 5” barrel.
