Default Can't Decide 686 Pro 4 or 5 inch

Are the dimensions the same size between the 6 and 7 round cylinder on the 686 Pro. Can't decide between the 4 or 5 inch, I believe the 4" holds 6 and the 5" holds 7. Which one is preferred? Thanks for your help

What is the gun's intended purpose? I don't know the answer as far as round count but for carry purposes, especially in the hot humid environment we live in, the 5" is getting a bit long. Even a 4" is pushing it. However, for target, field, duty or even home defense, I very much like the 5". Back to the round count, more is usually better but I depended on a 6 shot for most of my career and I'm comfortable with 6.

I have 4 - 686 revolvers... 2 are 5 inch 7 shots... others are 3 inch & 6 inch 6 shots... so I vote for 686+ 5 inch Pro

I like the way the 5" barrel balances.

^^^^what he said. IMO the 4" is more versatile when it comes to carry, even though the 686 is getting a little heavy for carry in either bbl length. YMMV

For shooting, I like the 5. Have had both. Can't go wrong with either but I loved the 5. Sold it because I wanted 8 rounds for competition.

There is nothing about the 686-6, 5" Plus I don't like. (except the I.L. but so what)
To me, the weight & balance feel great. It was a saw it, and had to have it kind of thing. Most of us have experienced that.
I had a 6" 686-3, and have a 586 no dash, 4".

As a range toy, home defense gun either works, but if you ever intend to try your hand at gun games with a revolver, the 7-shot is the red-headed step-child of the gun world. For IDPA you are limited to 6-rounds and a 4.2" barrel.

Adios,

Pizza Bob

I have the 686+ 5” and really like it. In my book 7 is better than 6, I do have both, moon clips are nice but in the little .357 they are more finicky than the .45 ACP. I like the .357 though and the 5” carries just fine for me.

Adios,

Yes, and if you drive around getting in and out of a pickup like I do, the 4" barrel carries well in a OWB strong side holster, and the 5" barrel hangs up on everything. My IDPA revolver rig actually can be carried all day!

You can't go wrong with either. I bought a SSR Pro Series (4.2 inch barrel) and it is my favorite. On the other hand, last week shooting at the range, there was a gentleman who had a Performance Center 5 inch and he let me shoot it. I must say it was mighty nice!! You know you could buy them both! Spend your "stimulus check" Trump sent you!!!LOL
