One of my favorites!

It’s actually a 5”, correct grips and a super accurate wonderful shooting pre-lock, pre-mim revolver. Try it, I bet it will become a keeper!

Around my way 750-800 without box and papers.

I just have way too many guns, traveling more, less time to take care of them. This is a beauty, if fired, it was very little !! Are the grips right for it ?

Love those grips. Love that gun. Would trade my 625 4" PC for that in a heart beat.

Do a quick search for 625-3 and you will find ALOT of threads here. It’s a .45 ACP and is designed to be used with full moon clips.

Early issue with the problem Pachmayr grips. The grip screw interferes with the main spring. How could that be you ask ? Well the factory just never even considered such so those Pachmayrs didn’t last long. The story behind this was interesting but not mine to tell.

It’s a thousand dollar gun.

Put it up for sale on the classifieds here for $1000 and it will be sold the same day.

I have the 5” 625-2, 45acp. Sweet Shooter.

Not sure why you are so down on it.

It’s a pleasure to shoot.

I owned one of those with the Pachmayr grips once. Solved the mainspring interference problem by drilling holes in the correct places then relocating the screw/nut. I filled the holes in the grips with some black RTV compound.

Here in CT, it would get put in the counter with $1000 on the hang tag and it’ll be gone in a day.

Pre Lock N-Frame that shoots 45acp?

$1000 all day.

Mine is a hoot.

I am sure that you are getting PMs on it with offers already.

Maybe someone will offer you a good deal that you can’t pass up.

The Pre-Lock 625s are not too commonly seen like some other S&Ws.

If you are looking to sell off stuff, this Forum does have a classifieds section and the members here are really top notch folks.

Sounds to me like you are just getting started.

You may want to consider selling off a few other pieces to keep what obviously has several people drooling. Personally, I am not that hot on stainless or nickel guns. My 45acp is the blued 25-2.

Mostly a collector of battle guns. Used to have many many S&W's, now maybe just a couple others.

I have no idea what that means Diesel....

Been sitting here sipping coffee, finally Googling this orphan pistol, lots of info and posts about them, guess a lot of people like them. Also have a Model 10 short barrel, in box , will have to post that one later. Maybe someone will want both !!!

Surprised at the valuation but who knows at $1k. Consider selling in the classified ads here. They would be bought by fellow collectors who appreciate them. Start higher end then gradually adjust price if you want. Just an idea. Best, TH

If you don't like the Pachys (I didn't like them on mine, which I bought in early 1989) you can change them out easily.

Here's how mine looks right now (without having been cleaned from the last firing).

As others here have said, these are magnificent guns in every way.

Cheers,
Whisper

drop the Pachmayrs, get yourself a Hogue Fancy Wood grip w/o finger grooves and with striped cap and you will find that this is probably THE FINEST target revolver of your 63 pistols. If not, make someone else happy. They sell for about 800 - 1000 * over here in Germany - if you can find one at all.

regards from Germany

This is a fact. I have two of these 4" and 5". They are so much fun to shoot I am planning on selling off my 45 automatics. I need a 3" to complete the trio.

I've been looking for just that revolver for a long time in .44 Colt which I believe yours is. I'd send you an offer if I wasn't in CA but due to our rules, I can't get it shipped in because it's not 25 yrs old or older and that particular model is not on the current list of allowed handguns. Good luck, I hope you get a good price for it, I would replace the grips with Culinas and shoot the heck out of it.

When I posted about the Pacmayr grip screw contacting the mainspring I certainly wasn’t bad mouthing these 625’s. When I was in the business these guns were sucked up and back ordered within months of hitting the shops. Every top pin and plate shooter wanted one and then slicked up ASAP. I’ve got one left and it ain’t going anywhere but to the range. I don’t usually care for the N frame as they don’t fit me but the 625 is one exception I make. Shoot mostly AR ammo as the moon clips are a nuisance.

Honestly many really good shooters never knew about this problem but complained about a hard spot or knuckle in the end of the DA pull. if I removed the grips and installed another set you could feel the difference in the DA pull. Since I almost always re-shaped and balanced the mainspring on my action jobs these grips were impossible to work around. It was years later and after S&W corrected the problem that I found out some of these of these Pachmayr ‘ Grippers ‘ cleared the mainspring. Something changed ?

No, it’s definitely .45ACP. It’s odd that it’s marked just .45 caliber. That would tend to point to .45LC, so I can understand the confusion.

Definitely an $800 to $1000 gun, depending on your local market. I have a 5” -2 and 3” -3. I am happy to own both. I’d dump the M10.

Are the .45ACP models more desirable than the .45LC models?

Yes especially with competitors shooting pins and plates and other disciplines.

It got to the stage that in one of the shooting sports (not IPSC) the 5" 625 was banned because it fitted into the "commercial box parameters", and then out shot all of the other types (read mainly 1911's) so it had to be a 4" barrel to compete. Simply put, the other guys hated being beaten by what was effectively a stock revolver. I still enjoy shooting my early 5" with either moon clips or my own reloads in 0.45 AR. Dave_n

The similar .45 caliber marking on the barrels for both .45acp and .45Colt examples was/is a trend(tradition?) for both S&W and Colt that goes way back.

For Colt it goes all the way back to at least the M1909/M1917 model barrel markings. (I'd need to research what S&W was putting on their previous models' barrels in .45Colt.) I'm sure I've seen a few Colt & S&W M1917 commercial models in .45Colt with barrels marked similarly to their M1917 45acp models. (And I believe even a few lettered .45Colt examples made right smack dab in the middle of the U.S. military contract M1917 run IIRC.)

Yes, as Rick said the 45 acp is more desirable in the 625. In addition to my 3 and 5 inch 625s, I have two Mountain Guns in 45 Colt, 625-6 and 25-13. I appreciate all of them equally.

I'm not a competition shooter, but I remember when this happened. Used 5" 625s started showing up for sale at very reasonable prices as the guys sold them off to buy 4" guns.

I picked up a nice 625-2 with a Millett site at a very good price. I bought it even though I already had a 4" 625-3 that I purchased very reasonably before the rule change.

I still have them both and I doubt I will ever sell them.

I bought a 5 inch 625-6 in .45 ACP in 1999 to shoot as our club was just getting interested in shooting that particular match. Alas, the rules changed, I safed the gun and just got it out to shoot this spring. Poor thing waited 20 years for some action. I've put about 500 rounds of AR ammo through it this spring and a couple hundred ACPs. Its all MIM inside, but no lock and it shoots pretty good!

I certainly have been enjoying it! I ditched the Pach’s right after I got it and put this beautiful set of Culina combat stocks on it.
