629 - Please talk me off the ledge!
Given that this is the SW Forum, a.k.a - "Enabler's Ally", here goes. Saw a wonderfully elegant 3" 629 (with lock ) at the LGS today. Wonderful, beautiful, grips looked almost custom in their beauty. It was new, not a trade in or anything. I just thought, "Dang, $850 for a new one.....", but a really, really nice, 3" new one. Almost looked polished to me. Thinking about heading back on Tuesday and perhaps take along my unfired Springfield XD .45 as some trade fodder......TALK ME OFF THE LEDGE! I don't need this...but then again, I passed the "need" phase about 35 years ago!

As Niki says " Just Do it " Life is too short not to get the things that we want and not necessarily need.

This is funny. You are coming here looking for the voice of restraint and reason? This is the last place you should go, based on the replies you got.
But, if you want an opinion, I don't like guns with locks, don't like hand cannons and if this is going to be a range gun, the cartridge has a lot more capability than the gun. You lose sight radius, and velocity as well as long distance capability.
If you do buy it, check it over real good for QC issues.
Good luck, hope you enjoy it

In retrospect, I should have titled this, "Give me a nudge over the ledge!". And to those that asked: No, no I didn't expect to be talked off of the ledge - but it gives us all something to discuss and I always enjoy the myriad of perspectives.

I have a Backpacker dash four, I think, that is really fun with light to medium loads. Not so much with factory ammo!
I don’t Like the lock either, but there are some good guns with it.

Talk you off the ledge? I don't think so...
Here is a pic of my polished 4 inch 629-6 with nice Hogue wood grips, you know, for a little push...

Two things are gonna happen - you will get a $250 offer on the Springfield and when you see one of those 629’s without the lock... you’re gonna wish you held off - there, I said it!

You are SPOT ON and that is what is honestly giving me the real pause. I can likely scare up a nice, short-tubed, pre-lock 29 for not much more. There I said it

All that I can tell you is that it is not a 357. It fires that expensive ammunition that you really do not need and does nothing that a 357 cannot do. Wouldn't you like a nice 357 instead? One that you already have ammo for? Well, I tried...

Skip it. If you want a 629, get a 6.5 inch barrel. Learn to handload and avoid $35 boxes of ammo.
Or just get a .357.

I did not enjoy shooting my 629-6 because of recoil. Even changed out the grips to no avail. That gun just punished my hand too much. Traded it for a Ruger Redhawk with Bantam grips. Recoil is much more manageable. I always shoot full house reloads.

I have a 29-5, 5" Classic DX with the 5" bbl. A wonderful reasonably scarce piece with the 5" bbl, but the Morado combats hurt plenty. It came with Hogues, but I never tried them. I just fired 12 rounds cleaned it and put it away 28 years ago. The Super Blackhawk is a more comfortable shooter IMO with rubber grips

That is correct. Until I read your comment, I didn’t realize that I had .357’s clouding my thoughts when I posted. What’s funny is that I have both a 29-4 and a 629 classic. Both great guns. However, I agree with you on the .357. For me, it’s the greatest combination of beauty and utility ever put into a handgun.
However, in the spirit of supporting the OP, here’s a 29 with Snakewood and a 629 Classic with American Holly. Both sets of grips were made by John Culina.

Don’t jump! It’s not worth it!
Unless you want the lock, hold out for a 3” without. There’re plenty out there.

a 3'' will have significant kick, I like the 4'' better in 44. As a range shooter the gun isn't useful as not enough fun to shoot, as a carry piece too big, as a beautiful collector to look at and enjoy...well it has the L O C K. Just wait and something better is going to come along.

Come on Mod 34...............we just gottsa know....did he fire 6 or only 5 (whoops) I mean did you leap off the ledge or not??
Two months exactly to the day......tell us you jumped and got that guy, lock and all. Need those pics too (No....pics of your XD 45 will not suffice).
I for one have to know as I am still working hard towards my Official SWCA Enabler Merit Badge, and I felt sorry that I didn't see your original post till this morning so couldn't do any more pushing than the others who have already tried.

Mod 34, just like cmansguns, I'd like to know if you took the plunge. I have a 686+-6 3" that I bought because I have a 36-6 I love. Just shot the 686+ in a PPC match last Sat and I was amazed by the factory trigger pull! It was lighter and smoother than my 36-6 which has a reduced rebound spring.
Because I like the looks of the 3" revolvers , I put a 629 3" on layaway . Even though the 686+ and the 629 have the "infernal" lock, I am hoping that the trigger on the 629 is just like the one on my 686+!

A 3" .44 new for $850. Buy it. If anything it is an investment.

It's not very practical and ammo is expensive but it sure is a beautiful gun. Even with the lock.

My recent manufacture 3" 629 is one of my main carry guns. I love it. I carry it loaded with Silvertips which aren't as hot as full tilt 240gr magnums.
