It's very nice but IMO worth no more than 50% of that price. 75% maybe. Maybe not that much, now that I did the math. $800, yes, I'll grant that, but not $1600. I had one sold for me for the S&W Symposium that didn't happen and it went for a surprising $750 but it was not pristine. So, okay, maybe $900 for "pristine" but if you're gonna shoot it, well, that's pretty doggone high at $16xx for a shooter. If you think it's the S&W version of the Colt Python then, oaky, put it away, leave it to your grandkids, maybe someday the gun sells for 2 grand but not in my lifetime.

PS:

How is Prescott these days? One of my favorite American towns. I miss the Granite Dells; it's been a long time.....

It's still nicer than many alternative locations, but almost unrecognizable from what it was 25 years ago. The Dells are as beautiful as ever!

Back on topic, I have been watching 19 snubbies for a while (picked up a 19-3 a couple months ago), and agree this is about double 'all the money' for a 19-5. I've seen a number of really nice P&R snubbie 19s with box and papers sell for less over the last 6 months.

I got a really nice M19-2 snubbie a couple of years back for about $700 and that was in CA. I guess somebody REALLY WANTED IT who had the money to pay.

I bought a 19-4 2 1/2 inch last year at a LGS for $750 so too high for me. Mine did not have the box or tools either.

I didn't check the bid history on this revolver, but I would bet that two people who REALLY wanted it got into a bidding war. I just hope the auction winner is happy...

Absolutely ridiculous. That for a P & R nickel 2.5" ANIB maybe.

Its a crazy price ,but the market for older Smiths has been in general crazy. Check Guns Intl., you`ll see what I mean.Model 29-2s up to $2500 for a minty one. As I said before, I couldnt afford to buy today what I could buy last year. Bizzare

Sold a gun on GB last year, we were hoping for $2500.
Sold for just over $5000!!!

Don't drink and bid.

I was sure that when I checked the bid history, there would have been 2 bidders that lost their minds.

Turns out, it was a few. (A couple with NR)

Here's two 19-3 snubbies that I was watching in March... one blue, one nickel, both with boxes/papers tools. $999 and $1200 respectively.

Smith & Wesson Model 19-3 S&W 19 2 1/2" Box & Papers Pinned Recessed 1972 - Revolvers at GunBroker.com : 861559612

S&W Model 19-3 2 1/2'' Nickel 1977 LNIB - Revolvers at GunBroker.com : 861184641

I thought the blue one would bid a bit higher, honestly, but both came in under the 19-5 number. The highest I've seen recently was ~$1500 for a NIB 19-4 nickel 2.5".

I would love to be able to talk to the bidders and ask why this gun was so special?

They didn't know what they were bidding on and the photos were expertly done.

That's a good point. Photos definitely make an auction. I know I have passed on several guns that probably would have been bargains, but had poor photos. Great photos and a lack of detailed knowledge of S&Ws may have been a factor.

Unbelievable!

I was watching that one, too. Makes me want to "baby" my 2.5" 19-5, which is in REALLY nice shape. But it's not P&R. I bought mine because it was a good price, at the time, for what it is, a tight, medium-frame .357. I got mine a little over a year ago, 599 OTD (no box).

Now, I wouldn't sell it, for any REASONABLE amount of money. It's the one gun in my stable, that I would truly trust my life to. I shoot it as well as anything I've ever fired.

But for $1610...

Same story with auctions. 2 people with more money than sense let their egos take over. Also, it might have been some shill bidding involved. I was bidding on a gun recently and one guy kept going higher. Checked him out and most of his “winning bids” were for the same seller.

Even if this was an unfired, with box, all papers, and tools Model 19-5 it still would not be worth $1600. Without box, papers, and tools, it's a really nice piece worth $700-$800.

I have a 66 no dash 2.5" that was brand new unfired in box. I took it to Alex Hamilton of Ten Ring Precision and had his fabulous accurizing job done and I would probably sell it for $1600 if I thought I could ever replace it. .

Two bidders with NR took it past $877.
Then two hard heads battled it out.
Ridiculous price....seller should be happy.

Bidders with an NR bidding goofy prices
concern me.

OK, makes me wonder what is going on, but some folks have more money than sense. I am related to a bunch of them.

They concern me too. Auctions like this get cited by people when they try to sell something for an exorbitant price. ("They're going on Gunbroker for $2000.") It affects the market despite being an anomaly.

I sold a pretty much unfired 19-5 2.5 about 8-9 months ago at a local gun show. Had it for sale for along time at 850. Because it looked brand new, finally an older fellow walked up looked at it for a minute said 850, and paid for it. I bought it about 20 years ago from a woman whos husband passed, he kept in the bedroom drawer. She didn't like handguns. I asked her if she was sure, because she might need a gun. She laughed and took me to a room covered in trap/sheet trophies as tall as me and probably 7-8 shotguns all HERS. She again repeated, " I dont need a handgun" and sold me the gun.

The winning bidder didn't pay too much, they just bought it early...

I almost always check on the higher end auctions to see if winner is any one I might know. Out of 78 bids, winner had 2 and both were within last 15 minutes. I too wonder if buyer had any remorse.

That sounds like an awful lot of money. Getting near m27 prices. Wast it a couple guys slinging testosterone?

Looks like I picked a good time to sell off some of my collection. I was hoping to get $1k for a Model 19-4. I was ecstatic when I checked the completed auction price, yesterday. S&W Model 19-4 - Revolvers at GunBroker.com : 873193740

Does seem to be a bit on the high side... Then again, if that is something you really want and money is not the driving factor (i.e., want is), it happens.

My 'gut feeling' is that someone who is not a collector and really wanted it, didn't care. This is not a cheap hobby...

If a friend asked me to fairly appraise this item, auction value, I would have said $900-$950; even knowing what they were a few years ago.

Deep pockets but a little short on common sense. Those insane prices are why i just bought a 2 1/2 inch 686 plus. I am in the process on polishing it to as shiny as i can make it. Its a tedious job

I won that gun on GunBroker in 2014 with a $550 bid.

Lots of professionally done photos and a little hype in the description. It's called marketing and it pays. Some times it pays well.

If it did not have the rub/scratch on backstrap, was P&R, with box, I would have gone 1K, this one-800 max. I am going to have to put the pre-27 and wagon train up for sale. Be Safe,

To quote an old man I worked with when I was in college, "Them people done lost they damned minds." In his earlier life, he'd been a Pullman Porter. He drove a nicer car than my Dad's company car.

With firearms, it is currently a seller's market. You have a pandemic in progress, social unrest, and an upcoming presidential election. This is a trifecta for making a lot of people rush out and buy firearms. As demand rises and supply remains the same or diminishes, prices rise dramatically. Economics 101.

$1610 is some crazy pricing for a 19-anything. Unless maybe the first Combat Magnum that rolled off the line.

$1610....

I feel old.

The last auction I watched for a LNIB Pre-19 Combat Magnum hammered at over $3000...

This is my 19-3 P&R nickel ANIB and honestly I wouldn't ask that price if I intended to sell it.

Auction sites are plagued with shill bidders and gone broker is infamous for pretend auctions. The shills buy from themselves so when they actually sell one the buyer is fooled into believing an outrageous bid is a whole lot lower than a recent actual sale. All they have to do is claim their shell bidder never paid then their fees are waived.

I would love to have that revolver but seeing one go for $1,600 certainly is an eye opener. I hope sale doesn't set the bar for future auctions.

Same seller had a 25-5 4" Blue, no box or papers and no pinned barrel 98% go for $5025.00.
Something is going on.

I have seen this conspiracy claim many times. I can attest that while it may happen, it does not ring true in many cases. If you click the link that I shared in post #28, you will see an auction of mine that ended two days ago. The gun was a 4" 19-4 in excellent condition with original box and nothing else. The winner obviously has deep pockets and is willing to pay a premium. Another bidder really wanted it and finally stopped bidding after his final bid of $2,000.00 (and lost by $1.00). That was not a shill bidder. It was a gentleman from California that had asked me several questions about the gun and it's history, during the time of the auction. One of the reasons he bid so much was that many sellers refuse to ship a gun to California. I told him that I would.

You might be careful going to CA. I sent a 29-2 but had to remove the DA sear to make it legal.

I spoke with my FFL about it. He said that there's an online form he would have to fill out that was no big deal. All of the extra hoops to jump through are on the buyers end. Who told you that you had to remove parts from a 29-2 to ship to California?
