Default New model 66 classic

This isn't my picture, but it's what my new m66 looked like when I got it.

I wanted it to look more like an older model 66, so I replaced the black thumb piece and screws with SS, polished the trigger, hammer and front sight, replaced the rubber grip with a wood target grip, and polished the gun, but only enough to get rid of that gray painted look.

Thanks, man. It looks better in person. The polishing is more shiny than the picture shows, and it's even too.The camera just didn't capture it very good, I think because the flash wiped out the shine. Here's a picture before I polished -i think the picture of unpolished looks better in picture, but it certainly doesn't in real life. The bead blasted, painted looking finish looked terribly cheap in real life.

The picture host website turned it the picture 45*, but you can still tell.

I bought a snub nose model 66. I took it to a gunsmith and had the rear sight changed to a fixed one. I do not like adjustable sights on combat guns. I am very happy with it now.

Superb job! I envy you your skills. One thing left to do, if you so choose: Install the older style cylinder release. Good shooting:

Beautiful pistol, in all ways more functional than an old classic, but if I had a new M-66 and a milling machine, I might figure a way to make the dog leg cylinder stop look more like an old one. That would be a project worth doing. Dinosaur purists like me might also drill in a barrel pin. Nah!

I love the polished look, but the matte finish has grown on me.

Here's the picture that counts of my original, unaltered 66-8 snub.

That's looks very good. What tools and compound did you use to get the finish to where it is now? How long did this take?

Well done! This is what they should like from the factory. I hate the fuzz finish and black parts that they are using on the M66 now.

Real nice job you did there putting a much needed shine on it, in keeping with a more classic look. I don't care for the bead blasted finish one iota...looks so 'blah' I bet the bullets go slower.

Mother's mag polish and some socks. I hand polished it, because I only wanted it to look like stainless steel, I didn't want it a mirror finish. I have a polishing wheel and compounds, but it would've been too much for this.
It took 2 or 3 hours total. I first polished everything I could with the gun assembled, then the next night I took it apart to get in places like inside the trigger guard and around the cylinder release button. One thing is that some parts are easier to polish than others -the barrel was very easy to polish for some reason, but the cylinder seems to be the hardest. The main frame was in between -harder than the barrel, but easier than the cylinder.

Edit: I did use a dremel and polishing compound to polish the trigger and hammer. I didn't even sand it, I used the polishing pad and compound to strip the black coating that was on it. But I could've sanded the black off and hand polished with the Mother's too.

Same here. That bead blast, flat finish looks great on the performance center 686, but the 66 classic would be better if they made the finish and grips more like the original. I think they did a better job on the model 19 classic, but not so much on the new 66. I bought this gun knowing it was ugly, and with plans to make it look more like the real model 66.
It still doesn't match the beauty of a real original model 66 and it never will, but it's far closer than it was when I got it.

I was following the other thread and then kind of lost track. The project came out great. All you need to do now is get some nice Goncalo Alves combats and an ElPaso Saddlery floral pattern holster and belt and you'll be all set to carry her to church on Sundays! Good job!

They both look cool. Might have to order one of each 😂. Definitely nice work making it look classic old-school . Original goncalo alves are hard to find I bought a pair at a gun show a few years back for $100!
