Leap of faith got me a 640 no-dash
Had a couple drinks and was doing some late night Gunbroker surfing. Definitely a recipe for an impulse buy. I ran across a Centennial that was listed as as a 642. It looked like it could be an early 90s 642 before they went to the painted frames, but in the pic, the frame looked like stainless.
I figured that even with the limited pics, that it might be a 640 no-dash that was mis-labeled in the listing. I said what the heck and tossed out a bid and won it as the only bidder.
The gun showed up and was indeed a 640 no-dash and was in incredible shape. I'm guessing that this one was made around 1990 because it has a serial number beginning with "CEN", and is also marked "TESTED FOR +P+".
This gun looks like it had probably one cylinder of ammo run through it and was put away without being cleaned because it was hardly dirty.
I picked it up for $400 plus shipping and transfer, so about $450 total. The gun is beautiful and looks like it was made yesterday.
*(edit) Forgot to say that the vintage Tyler T-grip came with the gun.

Very nice catch!
The 640ND is my grail gun. Came close a couple of times on GB, but each time the bidding went north of $600, which exceeded my budget.
Someday I'll snag one. Enjoy yours!

I have one I bought new in the early 90’s. The SN is BPW and it’s not marked +P+. It’s an excellent revolver and one of my favorite carry guns.
A year or so ago I traded another gun for a 442 and only shot it once and traded it. No comparison with my 640. The 640 is much more pleasant to shoot.
Edit: corrected SN to BPW.

I had a no dash 640 and didn't recall a +P+ tested stamping! That is something I would have remembered, as I think that is pretty cool and different.

As far as I know, they only appeared on CEN serial numbered guns.

As I'm sure some of you remember, our absent comrade "Shouldazagged" had a 640 with the "+P+" stamping of which he was inordinately proud. Also a coach gun, 12 ga, IIRC. Let me close with my favorite ending line of his:

Shield #5103
P.S. Miss ya, Mike

I paid close to $600 back in 2012 for my Model 640 no dash. It too looked like it only had a couple of cylinders worth of ammo through it and came in the box with the papers and tools. I was glad to even find one for sale. I had wanted one since first seeing that model in a gun store back in the early 1990's. I think it is the best .38 Special J frame S&W ever made for a concealed carry piece. I love my Baby Chief but wouldn't think of carrying it.
Stainless steel, concealed hammer, strong enough for +P loads and enough weight to make it reasonably comfortable to shoot. What's not to love ?

That's a great pick up! I love the platform and my usual edc is a 640-1. I hope you enjoy your new j frame!

I was watching that one, but got busy and missed it when it closed. Glad you picked it up!

Congrats! I snagged one of those myself a couple years ago. Posted a pic of it around here someplace.

I went back and checked my 640 SN and the prefix is BPW. I bought it new and remembered the price tag was still in the box. It originally sold for $349 new.
