Default Mod 686-4+ 7 shot price check

Came across this listing for $950. Thoughts on if this is a fair price for this model and condition?

I've seen them new for like $750. Because that's what I'm buying next so I'm looking right now. They just went out of stock but will have again. It's happened before because of demand.

Default 686 price

I think it is very high. Depends on what you want. I just purchased a new 686+ Pro 5" for less than $800. It does have the lock, but that doesn't bother me.

That is high for a 4 inch gun in my opinion. Maybe not for a 2.5

I'm trying to find a 4" 7 shot pre lock. Do those pop up for sale in the $750-800 range often?

I think $950 is reasonable. I’ve seen them sell for over $1000. The -4 was the first 7 shot 686 model. I’ve seen more of the 6” 7 shot -4s around, then the 2-1/2” & 4”. Some will say that the -4 was the best engineering design, far better then the 7 shots of today. This is a limited production model.

You may find one for that price but in what condition?

If you’ve been looking, buy it. Get it, take a look at it and if you’re not happy, keep looking and sell when you find an upgrade.

That S&W 686-4 7 shooter with a 4" barrel is my Holy Grail gun. Years I have been looking for one. I have the 686-4 + 2.5", 6", 686-5 + 4", 686-6 + 4", blue 586-5 + 6" and a blue 586-7 4" 7 shooter. And a S&W 686-4 6 shooter. But not the 686-4 7 shooter with a 4" barrel. Oh well. If you see one buy it. Enjoy.

Being in the Market myself that price seems a bit on the high side - in my opinion. I'm seeing new in the 800 - 850 range for the S&W 686.

That's a scarce and desirable 686 that was produced for a very short time. The seller must be aware of its scarcity... that price is reasonable.

Agreed, price is not ridiculous for this variant.

I'd pay that and shoot it till my fingers fall off.

You might beat that price in Tulsa, last year, but you're not in Tulsa, and most pre lock guns in great shape are bringing premiums. In addition, in the Un Free States, that's a viable, legal platform that packs more punch than a 1911, can shoot multiple loadings, and is more reliable imo.

If you don't want it, mind forwarding the name of the seller?

I have a 5" 686 with a un-fluck cylinder 7 shot that 1200 can't buy, what makes you happy is the way to look at it.

I remember taking my 686-4+ 2.5" to the local shop a few years ago out of curiosity for trading , he was offering like $400. I would have been more receptive of him just throwing me onto the street with my junky revolver. At least one guy in another shop told me he simply did not want my 66-1.

As to the 686 in the original post I would not pay that much as I really don't find the 7 shot to be that desirable over a 6 shot. Yeah I do have a plus but thought the price was not too unreasonable at the time.

But if it is your "grail gun" you can go and buy it , enjoy it and the price paid will long be forgotten after years and years of shooting enjoyment. I did that recently with a 617-1 and have no regrets.

I paid $700 for this pre-lock 686+5 5" not long ago.

While the price might seem steep to some, if it's condition is as good as it looks, it's a bargain for someone who has 686 experience. I was looking for a 4" 686 to replace the 4-inch 686 I carried the first five years as an LEO when I ran across my dash 4, 6-inch, 686+ in excellent conditon, with box, papers, and tools at a LGS about six years ago. It was priced at $575. Glad I grabbed it when I did. Now, I'm looking for a deal on a 4-inch, pre-lock 586. IMO, the 4-inch 586/686s are premier handling .357 magnums.
