Lamest justification yet for a gun purchase, 625
I have a pair of grips that would fit it...
Yes, the absolute lamest justification yet for me on a gun purchase, having a set of grips and wanting a gun to use them on. The grips came from my recently acquired S&W 329. They were replaced by Hogue X-Frame grips and the thought of shooting that hand cannon with these wood grips is painful enough, I don't need to actually experience it.
So after a night of drunken browsing on GoingBroker.com of looking at N-Frame roundbutts and going into sticker shock on 627's and 610's, I found this 3" 625-3 Model of 1989 in .45ACP and bid on it, then I won it, then I got it home today and put the grips on. It shows a lot of holster wear, but mechanically it's fine. For the price I picked it up for I have no regrets. I have no practical need for it, it will be a range toy. I may turn it into a project gun and refinish it, thinking black chrome could be kind of cool.

"I have a pair of grips that would fit it." Wow. Never thought of that one. Gonna have to use it. I've already used the 'holster' variation of the above. Also the "I didn't want anyone else to buy it because they wouldn't understand or appreciate it."
S&W helps on the OP's grip rationalization by fitting IMHO terrible wood grips on otherwise superb revolvers, so there is ALWAYS a spare set of grips lying around to use as an excuse for a new gun. As if we need any excuses... Thank you, OP!

P.S. I always have spare J-frame grips to put on guns going into the shop. Never send a J in for work with an UM boot grip or Tyler T-grip. They will get lost...

Wait, you actually justify your gun purchases? This is new.
By the way, if the gun came with Pachmayr "Grippers" those are the correct original stocks, so don't throw them out. Enjoy!

Boy am I in trouble. I have about 30 pair of beautiful factory and custom grips with no gun to put them on.

Nice 625, from a great point in S&W product history.
But, lame justifications?
How about:
-"I already have a set of dies."
Or...
"I already have some brass."
(In either case, buried in a box, never used.)

If you happen to have either a holster, dies, or stocks for a firearm or caliber, then you are obligated to buy the matching firearm. It's not a lame justification, it is one of the founding rules for firearms ownership.

I don't know. I bought 4 CZ-75 magazines years ago when I had a CZ-85...assuming they would fit. Then, rather than getting rid of the mags, bought a CZ-75 to use them.

"I have a pair of grips that would for it ..." can be a very dangerous line! Couldn't that be comparable to the line, "I found a fabulous pair of high heels in the house that would look fantastic on a Size 1!"

Very Nice! I wished I had a shorty 625.
Now you've implanted in my brain another reason for going after another S&W... "Justification".
That sounds much better than "I couldn't help myself". I like it!
Hey...I've bought boxes for guns, guns for boxes, grips for guns, gun for grips, and even bought a gun for the gun. Kicking back in recliner with laptop, not listening to news, logged into Gunbroker, favorite beverage in hand...Makes for nice evening IMO.
If it hasn't happened already, someone needs to start a Forum Thread listing all the reasons/excuses for buying a gun.
Gotta get one of those 625 shorties.
Thanks for sharing your excellent find.

I had a friend that would go to gun shows and buy nice holsters, then start looking for a gun to fit it.

Nice score!
My most used justification is that it’s a good deal and if I got it at any other time, then I’d spend more money...hence I’m saving money on every purchase!
I also show the fiancée other ads or bids to help justify....
But then again, she picked hers because it had an owl on the grips.
I tried the ‘it’s one of my ‘grail’ guns - but she grew wise after she realized I had a very long list of grails.

I usually go with "Gee, that's neat and I don't already have one" but your notion of the unused grips is cool too.

If I may run with this one and on a more serious note: Do not be afraid to have a few magazines for guns you don't have. If things really go south, a firearm w/o the necessary mag is almost useless. I'm speaking of mags for commonly owned guns: 1911, Browning HP, Glock 17, AR, AK, M-1 Carbine, Ruger Mini-14, etc. Younger folks, please add mags for those guns I'm not familiar with.

Wait . . . didn't you have to take a pair a grips off that gun when you replace the grips . . . so now you have another pair of grips that need another gun to go on . . ..

I told my wife that in our wills we need to leave her jewelry to our niece and my guns to our nephew. She said that wasn't fair to our nephew. If she only knew. I don't need an excuse if she doesn't know!

I never use the words 'justify' or 'need' in the same sentence with 'another gun' or 'S&W revolver'. Try chick logic. Use 'just because'. In an extreme emergency, try 'I bought it for you'.

A very good point, though having the magazines "just in case" also leads to getting the gun to match. I had AR and M1 Carbine mags years before I ever got the guns. I do like the way you think, though ;-).

I have five J's. 2+ gips (besides the ones that came on them) for each - Hogue, CTG, Texas Grips, Altamont. I guess I just have to wait until they breed again...

I gotta old buggy wheel of a 19 century carriage....I was thinking... just maybe...I could....Naaaaw, oats are not too common here in the big city
On a more serious note, must one really need a good reason to do what we do here ? From what I can see, you did well.
When a woman starts out with a pair of ear rings then buys a necklace to match then a matching dress then of course 8 pair of shoes to match all the above....it makes sense...to someone.
I draw the line at matching houses though.

Sold a gun, last one in that caliber.
Had a few hundred rounds sitting in a can, no gun to shoot it going on 3 years now.
Heck, went and bought a gun to shoot up all that good ammo !

I can’t tell you how many times I’ve bought guns because I have a lonely set of grips, holster, speed loaders, etc. I am currently looking for a mint 36 because I have a beautiful set of Hogue tulipwood grips that need a home.

I was prepared to argue with you, but that gun is deserving of grips far better than anything altamont makes. Good acquisition by the way

Rationales are no longer necessary for me - single (divorced), and my last child graduated from pharmacy school last year leaving me with an extra $2000+ a month to invest wisely. If a classic 4 or 5 screw, or pinned & recessed Smith with beautiful Hogues or Ropers isn't a wise investment, I don't know what is, and I don't need no steenking broker (sage comment on GoingBroker.com, by the way). It's good to be the King

Well, hell. That did it, I just went to the shop and looked and sure enough, there is a bag of 50 new Starline 45 AR cases. Now to just wait for the Alabama Gun Collectors show in July-if I can. It's my excuse and I'm sticking to it.

I have a 625-3 3" only it has a bead blast finish, I like your brushed stainless much better. I didn't know Smith made both versions in the - 3. Seems like I learn something new here every day.

I am sure glad I do not have to justify anything I buy with Mrs. chukar.
All I ever hear from her is “oh that is a nice one“ and occasionally the dreaded “is that for me? Very thoughtful of you” when I drag a compact of some sort through the door.
But you guys got me thinking that I have a very nice set of K frame non-relieved diamond target stocks in the safe. It ain't an excuse but now it may become a mission.

Once upon a time the only 45 caliber gun I owned was a 1911. While searching a gun show for 45 cal bullet molds I got a super deal on two. One mold was a full button nose wadcutter that simply wouldn’t feed in a 1911. The generous gun show vendor added some moon clips to the deal. Having a mold only suitable for revolvers and made worse by having about a dozen moon clips. I was forced to buy a 45 ACP revolver. Started out with a Brazilian 1917, then another and another 45 ACP revolvers. I justified by blaming it on the vendor that coerced me into buying a bullet mold I didn’t need. It’s his fault not mine. I’m sure I got the “oh no not another how many do you need” lecture but I now have three 45ACP revolvers and she took a permanent walk from my life.

I don't use much in the way of justification on gun purchases.
I can now justify another or larger gun safe though.
