S&W Model 10-8 re-imported by CAI
I recently bought a S&W Model 10-8, from an online dealer. They are listed correctly as fair condition...they have good bores but need de-leading, the exterior finish is a mix of worn bluing and a sprayed lacquer finish that too is worn. My particular revolver has a serial range 9D20xxx, I have the S&W Catalogue. My question is does anyone know where they came from? Why were they lacquered? Mine has stamps that appear to be done...not by S&W or CAI, under the crane boss in front of the trigger guard it is stamped J P 2739. Thank you. K75RT

I saw one these Model 10 at a gun show today and remembered your question. The dealer said he got them from PW Arms, not Century Arms International (CAI). Their paperwork only indicated the guns came from Southeast Asia, a country was not named on the paperwork.
The sample on his table had the same "JP" marking as yours. I didn't catch a number since he showed that to me very quickly.
My guess is the lacquer finish was to reduce rusting in a humid environment.

JP596
I just picked up a Model 10 with import stamps. Stamped nice and small on the bottom of the grip frame: CAI, Georgia, VT
Mine has JP596 in front of the crane. Bore looks great. One of those "carried much, shot little" I'm guessing. Dying to go shoot it. Cleaned it up real good last night. Took side plate off and cleaned in there good. Put in a 13# trigger rebound spring. Trigger feels amazing in double action! Nicest DA of any revolver I have I'm pretty sure. That's impressive since I have an SP101 that has been to Gemini Customs.
Paid $289 plus tax, shipping, FFL transfer.
I knew what I was buying and figure a beater S&W is better than a new *insert gun name here* or some off-brand foreign made junk.
I need a nice set of used L/K frame grips for it. Something OEM hopefully. New grips wouldn't look right on such a beater.
Happy Memorial Day everyone!

id just about bet the JP#### marking is a Japanese Police inventory number. thats what we called them on the island. JPs. ifn i remember right from back when i was stationed on okinawa some JPs carried a wheel gun. never saw it drawn but the full flap holster flashes in my mind for some reason.
i know for a fact there are some documented runs of J frames that went to the JPs, rings a bell from an email i got a while back a man asking about a part or something for those.

I think all the gunsmith special model 10s being sold by J&G were marked that way. The 10-7 minus barrel, I got from them for I think $130 was. Se now they are priced at $149

Not much help as I don't track the D serial numbers. I do have a 10-6 s/n D42854 that shipped 5/1968. Yours should be in the fall of the same year. The serial numbers ran to D90000 in 1968. But remember the guns did not ship in s/n order.

new grips
Got lucky and found a beautiful pair of NOS grips on eBay
Wanted to stick with the "KPC" style since it's an old police gun. Target grips wouldn't seem right.

I have an import marked 13-2. It was clearly in the auction photos, but I missed it. Really ugly and in a terrible spot (below the cylinder latch). Otherwise a very nice P&R revolver with numbered stocks. I replaced it with a nicer example. I'll sell it when the right offer comes along.

I'm wanting a RB 3" M13 BAD! Dropped out at $1200 on the last one. PM me your price if you want. That's a nice gun. Too bad the import mark isn't on the bottom of the grip frame real tiny like my beater.

I just picked up two of the no-barrel round butt 10-7s as projects.
On another forum it was suggested that "JP" is "Jabatan Polis" for the Malaysian Police...??
I have a 2" heavy barrel inbound for one of them. The other may end up as an old school PPC build. Haven't had one of those since the late 1980s...
Both are marked 10-7, but do not have pinned barrels, and have AWC**** serial numbers... both being features attributed to -8s by the Standard Catalog.
