Default 581 Marked O.C.S 19 - Which Department?

I'm looking at a pawn shop 581. It's a beater for sure, but it's stamped O.C.S. 19 on the side. I can't find any reference to these markings in the 4th Edition.

Does anyone know what department this is?

I'm guessing that the C.S. is maybe County Sheriff. Orange County Sheriff? Owyhee County Sheriff? I was hoping to narrow it down with a search on "O" counties, but there are about 77 in the country.

There might be some good guesses, but the only way to know for sure is a letter from Roy.

How much are they asking?

Have you asked the store owner if he has records or a clue where he got it ?

It's a chain store pawn shop. They've typically not had any interesting history on anything I've bought there. Just kids behind the counter.

They are asking $599, and I got them down to $500 plus tax. It's still way too much for a gun with a decade of holster wear, but the incentive is that it wears a set of vintage GA Combats. The grip finish is well worn, but they are great shape otherwise. Even in worn shape, I could sell those off to reduce my net cost. Just scheming. It would be a great truck gun.

For those who suggest I flash $400 cash... been there, done that, got the T-shirt.

At 500, the stocks could be re-sold for 200 and leave you with a 300 model 581. Heck if you don't want it at that price, please post the shop info here...I'm sure that someone would jump on it

Im thinking like SAFireman , a 581 with a department mark is more than likely a typical police gun, long time carry but seldom shot. Even then, more than likely, it wasn't power house loads but department issue.

You got it down to 5 and change and the 581 is not really one that you find on every shelf. Most are keepers. If the bore looks decent and no battle rattle plus if you can move the grips then all that's left is how bad do you want a 581 for a few hundred ?
