Hi I have my first S&W on order a 929, I won’t get it for another couple of weeks. I live in Australia and I would like to order some additional moonclips for it before it arrives but don’t know the thickness. Could someone that has a 929 please let me know what thickness is required so that I can order from Brownells and hopefully have them here about the same time as the gun.

I ordered .035" ones from Speedbeez. They work good on Winchester brass.

I am using the RIMZ polymer moon clips with my 929. I use it for ICORE and USPSA (IPSC) competition.

No worry about what thickness clip to use or what headstamp brass. These hold all the brands I've tried very rigidly - which is what you want when you are trying to hitr those eight tiny holes with a reload on the clock. They work their magic by not just having clip fit into the extractor groove, but by also surrounding the case head. The clips are "rebated" like S&W Magnum cylinders of days gone by. That's the good news. The bad news is I don't know if they ship to Australia. I've e-mailed the owner of the company and asked. When he replies I'll let you know.

Not knowing what ammo is available in Australia, I really think this is your best bet, since these don't seem to be ammo specific the way the metal clips are. Plus no special tools to moon or demoon the ammo.

Not cheap, but less than the premium metal clips that may or may not work with whatever ammo is available there.

Seems like when I have looked into buying them in the past you order by the pistol model/caliber. No mention is made about thickness. The manufacturer know the correct thickness for that model.

Depends on what you are trying to achieve. If it is just a range toy then probably any clip will work because you are not concerned with the case to clip fit. Also easier with a rimless pistol cartridge because the extractor groove is spec'd by SAAMI. However, some clip thicknesses work better with some brands of brass than others.

If you are shooting an 8-shooter in competition, the rounds need to be held in the clip as rigidly as possible to facilitate a fast reload (this may seem counter-intuitive if your reference is a 625 - where a little cartridge wobble actually helps). With any of the 8-shooters the shorter the OAL of the cartridge and the heavier the bullet (preferably RN in configuration) and the less cartridge wobble in the clip - the faster the reload. The RIMZ clips do a stellar job of holding the cartridges rigidly and aren't picky about what brass you are using.

Here is some Remington 9mm in a RIMZ clip - there is no cartridge "droop"
