Default Possible purchase 6" barrel 586 no dash - $570 USD

Hi everyone

Have been looking on the net at Australia Gun dealers and what they have listed for sale at present. Of interest, I found this 6" barrel Model 586 no dash for about $570 USD ($795 in AUD). I put this about 1986????? (Can anyone confirm this please).

Speaking with the dealer, he says;-
- Nil trigger job (that's what I want). The trigger pull feels normal. I do not believe it has been modified. It still functions DA and SA just fine.
- Nil hammer push off.
- The seams are smooth and flush.
- The screws on the side are in good condition, they have not been mistreated.
- No rust at all, even under the grips.
- Some very minor holster wear marks, at the end of the barrel and front of the cylinder.
- It does not have the original box.
- The serial number is AJY8942.
- Hasn't had the M stamped on the frame anywhere

Is there anything not quite right that you guys can see that I haven't notice. Any feedback would be appreciated. Older 586's rarely come along in Australia that have not been heavily used.

For $570 USD, that would be a reasonable price here in most of the U.S. The only thing is that this 586 no-dash does not appear to have had the firing pin bushing changed. A large enough number of these revolvers had primer flow into the slightly oversized firing pin bushing hole that S&W issued a recall. If this revolver suffers from this problem, how easy and how much will it cost to have this service performed?

Sounds to be a pretty good deal. You didn't say anything about barrel/cylinder gap and end shake, both of which would be good to check on a used revolver, as would carry-up. Assuming all of that to be in order, $570 US would be an attractive price in this part of the world (New England).

With regard to the "M" stamp, the no dash and -1 586s (along with the 581, 681, and 686) sometimes experienced primer flow-back into the gap between the hammer nose and bushing, which caused the gun to lock up. I believe the consensus is that the problem was limited to very hot loads using 125 gr. bullets and Federal primers, and not all guns experienced it. S&W will still fix the problem at no cost - fitting a new hammer nose and bushing - and, at least in the US (not sure about Oz), will pay shipping both ways. Guns that have had the fix done will have an "M" stamped in the frame cutout, most often just above the Model designation. I have a number of no-dash and -1 586s and 686s, some of which have the M, some not. As I don't use any of them for SD and I've never had a problem in the few decades that I've owned them, I've never sent the "no M" ones back for the fix, and likely won't. I certainly wouldn't carry one for SD without the M, however.

As other have said: Grabbed it and run. It's looking good, M stamp or not doesn't matter to me at all. I do not pound magnums though mine ever. Love 586s.

I got about that same price when I sold my Model 686 ND a bit over two years ago... and that was to a dealer at a gun show. Other than SS vs blue, I had the same 6” gun right down to the target grips and lack of the M. Speaking of the modification, if it has been shot all these years and the FP bushing hasn’t been a problem so far, I seriously doubt you’ll have a problem with it now.

I don’t know much about the gun market in Oz these days, but a 6” L frame is a pretty nice find here these days, especially an early one. I hope you’ll enjoy it.

Regards,

The hammer nose of my 581 is black like yours but the bushing is blued. I think the difference may be because my revolver was never sent back for a recall. The modifications were done at the factory and the gun was blued and issued as an "M" model. See the photo of the original box below.

Guns are not an investment. Buy it if you want it. People often post like op on here then find out they sold because they dithered and wasted time. If you find a rare one at a somewhat reasonable price and you want it, you better buy it fast. A hundred bucks or more on a price will not stop me from getting something I really want.

That is a beautiful gun at a great price, even for down under. My database places it in early 1986 and if I had to guess, I would say around Feb/Mar. Don't concern yourself with the fact it has never been back to the factory for the "M" modification. I have a 686 that I bought when they first came out on the market in 1981. I carried it on duty for about 4 years before we transitioned to semi-autos. I still have it with its original box & target stocks. I never sent it in for the recall. It's had thousands of rounds through it over the years, both .357 & .38's. I never had a single issue with the gun. All of that hype was for one particular brand and style of ammunition (which probably isn't even manufactured anymore) strictly for liability issues, and I understand that. It doesn't effect the value either way. I just prefer not to have the M stamp. I really believe it is a moot point after all these years.
