629 Stealth Hunter
I’m looking at a 629 Stealth Hunter but I’m not crazy about that long of a barrel. Let’s say that I wanted that same barrel shape and contour but maybe 1” shorter. I could whack the end of the barrel but I would lose the front sight, scalloped cuts and muzzle ports. The other option is to cut and rethread the frame end. Is that totally crazy? What to do? I know I should just by the pistol and shoot it AS IS.

Save yourself a lot of money and get a 6" 629. You can't just whack up the barrel.

Unless you are very talented and have the proper tool and machines, you are heading into a very $$$ project.

The 7 1/2 inch Hunter Plus
has a surprisingly good balance for a long barrel. It is not as heavy as the huge barrel ones with the weights.

Stealth Hunter
Hey NightOwl,
I love that model. It looks perfect. Is it still being made or is it a custom?

Magnum Hunter
The newer Magnum Hunter looks a lot like that Hunter Plus model but it has that ugly Swiss cheese muzzlebrake on the end. I would like to see the Magnum Hunter without the brake. That might be about right. Anybody have a icture of the Magnum Hunter without the brake?

Are you looking for the integrated scope mount? If not, just get a 6.5" or 6.5" w/ powerport.
I looked at the stealth hunter and comp hunter. The comp hunter won out because of the weight. Just be sure you inspect any new smith for barrel cant before buying.

The brake on the Magnum Hunter is actually a nut that holds the 3 piece barrel system together. You can't shoot the gun without it.

This one is a 629-5 Hunter Plus, not MagnaPorted, with a Birdsong finish. The box came with no paperwork. No lock. I don't think its made anymore. When I bought it, I wanted a stainless without MagnaPorting with fluted cylinder and this one came up. Since then I bought one in stainless with MagnaPorting and fluted cylinder. I can't see much difference when shooting them. The Standard Catalog does not say much about them. I don't think that barrel profile is made anymore.
While I have several guns with the unfluted cylinder, I really prefer the fluted variety.

Magnum Hunter
So, the Magnum Hunter is held together with the muzzlebrake acting as a retaining nut. If I made a short retaining nut , that could retain the shroud to complete the “assembly”. Is this possible?
