Default Which one, 57 or 657 4 inch

I’m trying to thin the heard a bit and not sure which gun move on from. I’ve got a beautiful 4” 57 no dash in presentation case and a 4” 657 can’t decide which one to keep. Any thoughts , I just shoot occasionally, neither one really sees the outdoors.

Both are no seen for sale very often. The 657 is a great range gun that doesn't require a lot of care.

The boxed 57 might bring more money. How old is it? The 1st year guns can bring good money.

The 657 4” was a short run they only made about 5000, before they discontinued.

Keep both... thin something else from the herd

That would be a very difficult choice for me to decide between the two as neither one are all that common.

I've been looking for a 4" bbl for what feels like eons, and being in CA with our restrictive law regarding so called "off roster" handgun purchases, ones like those are rare here.

If you can’t keep both, keep the 57.

I would keep the 57. While I like the rust resistance of stainless steel, S&W will never make that beautiful blue finish again. The new blue guns of the Classic line are very nice, but the finish is much more of a solid black than those old blue models.

If it were me I wouldn't sell ether one, unless there is/was a very good reason why to sell one. I'm going to go against what others have said and recommend selling the 57. I'm a stainless guy so keep the 657.

Keep the M57.

I sold a really nice 6" M-57 and kept this M-58.
If it had been a 4" M-57 I think I would have sold it and still kept the M-58.
There's just something about the M-58 that I really like.

I sold my python thinking’s down the road I could replace it. I was wrong.
I sold off three more guns that I paid dearly to replace. I never replaced the python in 357.
My point is don’t sell right now. Unless you need the cash.

Since the curret value of each are about the same for different reasons, if your son is going to get the one you don't keep, is he old enough and mature enough to choose the one he would like to have?

I have both of the models you have...neither are going anywhere... The 4" 57/657/58 are my favorite Smiths...

My son is 21 and moving back to Arizona, I’m happy for him and would like to give him a going away present. He loves to shoot and loving out there he will use a lot more than I will in Mass., I guess if I give up the 657 we will both be happy.

Keep the M57, the P&R has better collector value and that one looks brand new. I'd love to have it, to make a pair with my M57 no dash 6 inch.

People are paying high prices (crazy high imho) for guns at the moment. I just saw a 57 no dash 4” in the wood box go for $1950 on Gunbroker. No telling what you would get for a 657 4”. I have a mint 57 no dash 6” with wood box that I am considering letting go. It is your typical safe queen. You can’t take them with you, and you may end up doing flip flops in your grave if your heirs were selling your Smith collection for chump change.

Just noticed that the 657 is sporting those smooth combat grips. Collectors will pay north of $400 for those grips alone. If you put that one up for sale on Gunbroker, let us know. We can pop some popcorn and watch the last 30 minutes of bidding...........should be quite entertaining!
