Default 686-1: What is this sticker?

Picked up another 4" 686-1 today. She's nice and tight, and came with her original target grips, but sports a little bit of wear here and there. I took the grips off for cleaning and inspection, and found this little sticker, as shown in the attached photo. Any idea what it might be? Never had one on a S&W revolver before. I want to clean the grip frame a bit since it looks like it's been a long while since the last time it was cleaned, but if the sticker is important or adds value I dont want to ruin it.

Thoughts?

IMO, that sticker was on the bottom of one of the target grip panels (butt).
I’ve seen numerous stickers on NIB guns from that era on the wood in the past.
I believe it was some sort of final inspection sticker

I've had a number of Smiths over my years that had that type of sticker. I recall them mostly from the mid to latter 80's era though. I too always took for granted that they were some part of the final inspection process before the grips were put on but maybe not. I either removed it or the CLP normally took care of it anyway. I never liked the sticky goo it left on my gun when it eventually came off. I also don't really think it'll bring much of a value by leaving it on. Anyway, that's my take on it.

My bet would be an inspectors sticker. Certainly easier than using a metal stamp - IMO.

Just for a little side-angle information, S&W used those stickers also on semiautomatic pistols in the 80's and 90's and I've had them on both new guns I got from that era and used ones as well.

I picked up this 686ND Border Patrol Comm. Had 2 on it..

When I sold it I could say with confidence, Factory fired only, like new. Premium on some guns for sure.

Inspection stickers. I peel them off and put on inside of box lid. It might mean something to somebody down the road... Basically, keep all the stuff that comes in the box.

I have several sets of grips from the late 70’s with a similar sticker.

I looked at the ad and was stunned that #8 didn’t sell. I hope Dan still has them, or at least didn’t sell them for less.

Holy Smokes!!! Sometimes it’s not what you know, it’s when you know it!
