Default Just picked up this 627-1...couple of questions

Hey All,

I just picked up this 627-1 just as you see in the pics for $695.

I think it was a good price considering it doesn't have the original stocks or box and the rear sights have been replaced with this cheap red dot. The stocks don't feel right to me so I think I'll replace them.

I was wondering a couple of things:

You think the price was good...would you have paid that?

What type of stocks would you consider...what were the originals?

Is there any merit to keeping the red dot...why this over iron sights on a gun like this? And if I decide to go back to the original sight where would I find?

Thanks for looking!

I could live with the grips but that monstrosity on top would have to go.
You could place a Want To Buy ad in the forum classifieds for a rear sight. Might get lucky.
It's a round butt frame.

Thanks for the feedback! It's good to know I wasn't off on thinking the price was good.

The stocks are nice and have nice grip...maybe I'm just use to having something with finger grips. I'll pop them off tomorrow and check the butt.

Thanks!

Ya...that red dot looks to be from the 90's! It needs to go.

Round butt...thanks!

I would have bought it at that price too. Few thoughts, the optics and mount would go immediately. Finding a rear sight probably won't be a problem. Was this model drilled and tapped from the factory?

On to the stocks. Am I the first to mention/notice they might be modified cokes? Looking at the swell, diamonds around escutcheons, etc, seems to me they might be. Do they have black washers inside?

This will be a fine shooter once you find a sight. Nice job OP

Yes, according to the 4th edition the dash one was the start of factory drilled and tapped.

I took off the stocks this morning and found a note...pretty cool.

Thanks!

Are you kidding? The 627-1 is a rare bird! It is the last of the checkered top strap 627s. You will need a checkered rear sight to match the top strap. A 627-0 rear sight might fit if they did not change the front screw location between the -0 and -1. There are some other folks here that can answer that question. There are probably some aftermarket sights available, if you get desperate. I, personally like the S&W rear sight, but I have been using them for a very long time.
The 627-0 has been selling for $1200 up, so I think you got a fine deal. They are great shooting guns!
The 627-2 did away with the checkered top strap and the 5.5 inch barrel.
Like others, the red dot needs to go away, but I would shoot it until I got some irons on it. It is way too tall above the bore for me to handle.

I am envious!! Enjoy that beast!

Congratulation on that steal.

In this day and age, almost ANY N-frame in good operating and cosmetic condition is worth $700+

But getting a rare piece like that one at that price is almost criminal. Product code 101024 almost always sells for double that or more on the auction sights these days

A correct checkered rear sight is going to be almost impossible to find for a -1. Only a small amount of -1s and tiny number of -2s had checkered rear sights. If I had to guess, I would say the total production of both engineering revisions of the checkered 627 was under 500 pieces. The remaining ~4800 top strap checkered 627s took the same rear sight as the carbon steel Model 27s so those are abundant by comparison.

Your best bet is to just get an uncheckered rear sight for a drilled and tapped N-frame and keep looking for a checkered one.

Or what would be so very much faster is to take the uncheckerd rear sight to a gunsmith and have it checkered and re-blued

Wow, thanks for the great info!

Good idea about having a rear sight checkered. I'd like to keep it as close to original as I can. I work in the machining industry so I do have some contacts. Guess I'll start hunting around for a rear sight or maybe two in case the first one doesn't work out.

Nice stocks on your 627, definitely a nice look!

Thanks!

Those are the grips that your gun would have originally shipped with

I imagine finding a new style checkered rear sight will be tough - the 627-1 is the only model to use it. All the earlier checkered top straps were longer, had the square nose and used the smaller hole for the mounting screw. It would be easier to find an earlier checkered sight and modify it to work.

Thanks for all of your input...sounds like I got a pretty good deal.

I put a request in in the WTB section for the rear sight...you never know, I might get lucky.

Thanks!

I'm thinking it might be possible to shorten an old style rear sight from a 27 and relocate the front screw hole, maybe. I'd have to rummage through the parts bins to be sure.

BTW, those old ProPoint reddots are usually decent, unlike the Accudots. The size may be off-putting, but for Steel Challenge or other speed games, it has it's uses. Try it on a .22 pistol or rifle for blasting steel targets. Just keep the dot in the upper 2/3's- 3/4 of the "window" to avoid parallax issues. I'd rather use one of those than the "cool" C-More sights. Height above bore line is about the same, and the Tasco has click adjustments.

There's no "almost criminal" about it!

That's a full on felony!

Contact the Fed and get in witness protection now!

You easily paid 1/2 for that - without the scope.

Ruger made a Redhawk that MAY be more stout than the 627-0/1, but if so, not by much.

Enjoy your fantastic new roscoe.

Stout is definitely a good word for it. I can see why they are desirable. I figured it was a good deal but not that good. Nice to win one once and a while.

I probably will try the red dot on a 22 rifle. I pulled it off and threw some new batteries in and it surprisingly didn't suck...pretty bright actually. Will probably make for some fun plinking.

It looks like Numrich has your rear sight.

I’d snag it ASAP.

I did order it...on 7/9. After I ordered it confirmation email stated "may take up to 5 weeks to fulfill order." Guess Numrich is real busy!

So almost three weeks in and still waiting.

Just wondering, have you tried to contact the lady that checkered the stocks. Curious if she remembers what she started with. Maybe she even will know who had her do the job. I like to find out things like that - it's part of being a "gun detective".

Adios,

Pizza Bob

Congratulations on your find.
It will be truly amazing if your rear sight order comes in!
I picked up a slightly older LNIB -0 a couple months back.
What an incredible chunk of craftsmanship to hold in your hand.
I am debating whether to bring mine out to the range and fire it for the first time since 1989 or flip it and pick up a new Performance Center revolver -- every time I think I’ve made up my mind, I talk myself out of it
Enjoy your new, old revolver.
Here are a couple pics of mine...

That's real sweet! I do love the original stocks.

I say shoot it! I'm itching to take mine out. I do have a 627 V-Comp and I'm interested in comparing the two side by side. Now that I see them together I need to look for some stocks for it too!

It's the right part in that it will fit and function, but not the right part in that it isn't the checkered version. It was however a good find, that will get the gun into shooting trim.

You got a bargain OP. I bought an odd 627 a few months back. It doesn't even have a dash number, but is says 627PC. It was the first 8 shot 5" slab side PC gun made for Lew Horton. It was is a pre lock gun that was also one of the first center fire guns to use the internal firing pin. It has some weird rebounded hammer that sits back slightly. I paid something like 750 for it with all the paper work and box.

I would have still bought that one in a heart beat.

Well the rear sight finally showed up and it looks like a good match to me. I'm pretty happy except it didn't come with the top strap screw so now I'm on the hunt for one...any help locating one? I did check Numrich but didn't see anything.

Thanks again for helping locate the sight Tom_R!

Thanks again for helping locate the sight Tom_R!

Looks like that would work...I'll give it a shot...cheap enough.

Thanks for the lead JD.

No problem. I needed one a few months ago, so you'll be good to go.

Default Same 627?

I picked up this 627 a few weeks ago. I am wondering if it is from the same run/series. The cylinder is a different color then the rest of the gun. I has the same gold bead sight and it is an 8 shot as mentioned in this thread but it can in a silver Performance Center case. Here are two pictures of the gun and a picture of the label on the case. From the posts in this thread, I think i got a great deal at $700.

GIL,
No that is a totally different version of the 627 than this thread has been discussing.

As mentioned earilier in this thread, the original 627s offered in 1997 had a serial number prefix of RJM. Your 627 Pinto will have a serial number that begins with CMC and would have been made 7 years later

Tose original revolvers were a Lew Horton Distributor Exclusive, your revolver was commissioned by AccuSport as a Distributor Exclusive Offering. I can not recall to total produced but 130 or 160 stick im my mind.

The product code of your revolver is 170294. As shown on the price sticker

You should find the original end label under the foam of your Performance Center case. It will further confirm that product code. That label will also have a 4 digit "SPEC ORD" number that will probably start with 4. That number will provide the date of manufacture of your revolver.

You got a steal on that gun, even if you had to pay the full price on the tag. I already own one and I still would have bought that one had I come across it

I changed the sights on mine. It now wears a set of LPA 3 dot Fiber Optic sights. I also put a set of JM grips on it
