My nephew has a 586 no dash 4" gun. No M is stamped near the serial number. Is this gun under the recall from years ago? Will S&W still do it at no charge?

Yep still under recall and the will still do the repairs... can't honestly say IN MY EXPERIENCE any recall has needed done in any of my no dash gun after some pretty rigorous testings... just IMO

If you do send it back, don't send the box, tools or grips--you will probably never see them again. Search the threads.

If you don't plan on using it for defense, I wouldn't bother sending it in. The only "issue" these had was with hot, .125 grain JHP's.

I also have a M-586 no dash that I bought new in about 1980. I have fired .357's and .38's through it with no issues at all and have no desire to send it off to some understaffed black hole ....... No sir!

There is a supposed premium for non repaired 686s and 586s. If the gun works, I'd leave her alone.

I think the hot 125s were a different issue with model 19s. The forcing cones broke.

The 686 cylinder locks up under heavy loads. I sent mine for the 'M' and I'm still wondering if it's right. I really need to check it thoroughly. I have run some pretty hot loads through it, but I need to see if there is a 'limit' that it just doesn't like to go beyond.

I have a 586 6" and I sent it back for the Mod back in the 90s. Kinda wish I didn't. More research on the issue seem to point to a specific Federal primer that's probably not even around anymore. If you haven't had any issue to date, I'd say keep it home and safe.

Ippd4, thanks for posting this question. I’ve recently acquired both a 586 and 686, no dash, No M, revolvers. I don’t feel compelled to return them to the mothership at this point. Not sure whenI’ll see them again...

Out of two 686 no dash guns I've owned, I had to send both back for locking up the cylinder. One gun with several different (but not all) Magnum loads and one gun would lock up with pretty much anything Magnum. I wouldn't go to the expense of sending it back unless there was a problem, though. I would try lots of different loads before I decided it was O.K.

I agree with most of the posters above, I wouldn't unless there was an issue with ammo I used. I carried and shot my no dash 586 as a duty weapon for years with the Remington .357 magnum 125 grain SJHP load, and never had an issue.
