Default 629-6 3" w/Bobbed Hammer

I picked up a Model 629-6 with a 3" Barrel. It has a bobbed hammer and a trigger in matching color. It came with the box but no paperwork. I don't think these are the original grips.

Does anyone know if the bobbed hammer was available as a special order from S&W or if they released this gun in that version? I bought the 4th Edition S&W Bible but I'm still trying to make heads or tails of the codes and stuff. To the best of my figuring, a bobbed hammer was not available as an option from the factory according to the book...but I'm prolly wrong.

your initial impressions appear correct, grips changed out, hammer bobbed or changed out. Also the front sight has been changed.. now the important part... how does it shoot? How does the action feel?

Looks good to me. And to answer your question, I think a bobbed hammer was indeed available as a custom option on some pieces, but generally speaking, most of the ones you find in the wild are post factory

Thunder,

I have not shot it yet. I literally just got it today. I have been on a Revolver buying spree for the last month and have a backlog. Range Day is gonna be a long one trying to get them all in.

So I should buy a new hammer and keep it on the side for resale purposes? Is the value on this hurt because of the bob? I was kinda hoping it was from the factory this way but such is my luck.

I suppose I’d google the 6 digit product code listed on the label of the box and look at the images that come up, if most of the images show a bobbed gun then perhaps it is factory, with S&W you just never know.... is the action converted to double action only or can you still pull the trigger some and then cock that hammer back as a single action?
Of course the surest answer is to contact S&W and ask. I’m sure someone will be along that owns one if you post that product code here...

If the hammer was bobbed outside S&W I probably would replace the hammer..... I wouldn’t likely ccw that unless I lived in bear country and even if I did, the hammer wouldn’t bother me. Value is subjective, to me it would be a point to negotiate the price down some. To somebody else they may be willing to pay extra for a bobbed hammer.
