64-5 bobbed hammer
I am trying to determine if the 64-5 4" was ever produced with a bobbed hammer from the factory. I am looking at one the seller claims was produced by S&W in that configuration. Thanks.

This sounds accurate IIRC. So I think some were factory, but not very many.

FWIW, I had a 2" 64 (don't know which dash number) with a factory bobbed/DAO hammer.
If the bobbed hammer is from the factory, it'll look like the NY-1 revolver hammers in Ladder13's photos. That's how mine looked...
Also, a lot of these were special request runs for contract security companies as well as law enforcement agencies. I don't believe S&W made these available for sale to the general public, but they ended up on the market after being sold by the organizations that ordered them.

Mine is/was a re-import - yes, S&W made them - but mine's not a re-import anymore, kinda sorta....

They are. Have a few more too.
They all have the NY-1 stamp on them, and serial number on the butt.
The 3” is eventually going back to reside in NY with a retired NYPD detective, once they let us expats back to visit.
Forum member wheelgun28 has the best collection of them I’ve seen, maybe he’ll see this and post.

I have a 4 inch and 2 inch that was formerly the property of Brinks Security.
The 2 inch made a trip to S&W to have a Combat Action Package performed on her.
I also had a 4 inch import model that made its way to Throne Gunsmiths and was shortened to a 3 inch barrel.
All were factory bobbed and DAO when I purchased them.

I saw a 4” HB m64, nickel with bobbed hammer which was not plated.
Also it was DA only. Tag was 375 out the door. The only thing that kept me from buying was the DA only. Is that factory or Bubba?

The only way I know how to tell is to look at the hammer profile. Look at the above factory bobbed/DAO hammer photos. There's a little "notch" where the curved part meets the used-to-be-a-spur area. Most aftermarket bobs I've seen, like ISCS Yoda's "after" photo, don't have that. Not sure I'd say it's a 100% certainty, but I think it's a pretty safe bet it's a factory hammer if it has that little notch.

I know it’s factory hammer. My question is the DA only. How do you tell if this gun left factory as DA only.

If it's factory bobbed, it's DAO. S&W isn't going to make a bobbed hammer like that and leave it DA/SA. Some gunsmiths will bob hammers and leave it DA/SA, which is not wise in my opinion, but it's too much of a liability for a factory-produced gun/part.
Of course, if you have it in hand for inspection, you can check to see if the hammer will stay cocked. After making sure the gun is unloaded and the muzzle is pointing in a safe direction, ease the hammer back by pulling the trigger until you can use your thumb to pull the hammer all the way back. If it doesn't cock to SA, then it's DAO.

I did pick up the 64-5 4"today. The hammer is identical to the ones shown here. I have not done the DAO test yet. The stainless needs some work but I enjoy bring the old back to life. It is not a NY gun.I will post the serial number in a bit and see it if is close to one anyone may have here to try and identify who it was made for. Thanks for all of you replys and posts, some nice guns out there for sure.

When I bought my 64-5 the first thing I did was pull the trigger slightly, grab the hammer with my thumb and forefinger, and pull it back to see if it would sit in a single action cocking notch. It did not, a true DAO hammer will have no notch for the trigger to sit in. Basically it won’t stay cocked. I was pretty impressed that this was factory, at the time I didn’t know they existed. I would honestly like to find another.

The srial number is BDB3931 which should date to 1988 or 1989. If anyone has one close and knows the history whether it was a large Brinks run or some PD I would like to know.
It did pass the test and is a true DAO.

Gun manufacturers sell and ship guns to foreign countries and when they later are sold back to a US importer they are imports.

I havent had a lot of free time lately. Most of my photos were on that host who tried to charge money for things. I had to move hosts for the pic.
Anyway, heres a few NYPD guns. Its an older photo and I have added to this since. They are much harder to find in the last few years.

I was not aware that ‘True DAO’ meant the hammer could not be locked back at all. That makes perfect sense of course.

Yes, mine was a "true DAO", the hammer does not lock back for single action.

Everyone likes it but I can't take credit for it except for certain design concepts. Especially the engraved USN Senior Chief anchor.
The original gun had the worst trigger I ever fired. One day, a few years ago (2016), TheShootist1894 posted a picture of a gun that he customized for another Forum member. I went a little nuts it was so cool and I contacted him forthwith. The one he did had a "Fitz trigger" and I said I didn't want that but he did enlarge the trigger guard by cutting away some metal. I obtained a Model 12 2" barrel (it still says "Airweight" on it) from another Forum member and sent both to TheShootist1894.
Lighter trigger
Smooth out the hammer
Change the barrels
Cerakote the entire gun (black)
Add the engraving
He did a couple of other tweaks to it that escape me presently but that's the history of that tricked out M64.
And it is a great concealed belt gun! The holster was made by barranti, another Forum member.
