Default model 29-5

I have absolutely no idea what I am doing, I was hoping to get some information on a firearm that my brother left me, passed away Thursday.
It is a Smith and Wesson 44 mag. Model 29-5.
Thank You so much for any help!

Very sorry for your loss. The serial number found on the butt of the gun is the best way to date the gun. The Model 29-5 came along in 1990. Your gun should have a 10 5/8" barrel measured from the front of the cylinder. If it does it was called the Silhouette model and built primarily for metallic silhouette shooting. Well the photos change everything. Nevermind.

Nice, I like it, but isn't it a 29-6? At least that's what the picture shows when I enlarge it?

The yoke recess does appear to be stamped MOD 29-6. The CAM serial number prefix indicates it was produced in about January 1996.

It appears to have a standard 6" barrel.

I may be stupid, but it looks like a blued 6" 29-6.

Sorry to hear of the loss of your brother. My condolences.

Your revolver is a 29-6 and it is a very good one to own. It has the full endurance package and "no" lock.

My 29-6 in the photo below (serial # CCL76XX) was built in 1998 per a call to S&W. Mine also came with the Hogue grips like on yours but I prefer the Pachmayr Decelerator's that are on it in the photo ( I put the Hogues away in my grip box).

I'll not guess the value of your gun, but I have noted that on GunBroker in recent months that 29-6's in +95% condition have sold with high bids ranging from $900 to $1200.

Hope this was helpful.

Don

First, I am very sorry to hear of the loss of your brother, my condolences to you and your family.

Second, welcome to the S&W Forums.

Finally, you have inherited a Model 29-6 with the 6-inch barrel, blued finish. These are nice 44 Magnum revolvers and have all of the durability upgrades that S&W could engineer to make the Model 29 withstand prolonged use of full power ammo. These are typically very good revolvers.

As for value, without the original box, papers, tools and with signs of wear and use, probably worth $700-$1000, depending upon where you live.

Sympathies on the loss of your brother. I'm sure you'll fondly think of him whenever you shoot the pistol...
