Happy and Sad
Happy about my new 686 + 3" rev. And, sad that it's going back to Smith& Wesson for a late timing issue with one chamber! Picked it up yesterday from my FFL. Examined it for cosmetic issues. Found none.
Took it home and cleaned and lubed it. Put snap caps in to do some dry practice. Decided to check timing using the "thumb-drag" method. Shocked to find one chamber "late."
S&W customer service emailed a FedEx label. Estimate is four weeks.
Have other revolvers to shoot. But I'm disappointed. Anyone else experience this issue with a new gun?

Sorry to hear about this problem with the new revolver.
I'm sure you have developed your own way of doing this carry up check, but that's not how the factory checks timing. Perhaps they didn't run a prescribed set of final checks at all when they finished assembling the gun. It seems there has been a fair amount of negative feedback here of late on the new, "just out of the box" examples being received and immediately sent back because of various issues, including carry up.
Hope your gun's trip back is a successful one.

Well, original estimate was four weeks. That was four weeks ago. Spoke with CS and now it's six weeks! Hurry up and wait.

No ...can't say I have .
But then again , I've never checked timing by the "Thumb Drag" method, whatever that might be .
My method is called ...shoot the gun and see how it functions.
Hope they find something to fix for you .

Thumb drag is good for finding late timing issues, but it does not really reflect real world use and function. Typically, if the cylinder times correctly with deliberate, slow double action and single action cocking, then it is considered to be functioning correctly.

Make sure to have empty cases in the cylinder when doing timing check. It makes a difference.

Thanks for the updates and timeline. Any comments on how the gun is functioning now?

I have had multiple QC issues with new S&W guns over the last few years. Sent one back to the factory for the second time a few days ago.
They seem to have gotten careless about barrel-related issues like improper clocking and barrel-cylinder gaps.
As I stated in a post yesterday, I think that Taurus has better quality control than S&W nowadays.

I feel your pain. If it's any consolation, my 686 times great now. Added the Altamont boot grips to make it easier to carry. I do love S&W.
Hope yours comes back 4.0.
I too have a Taurus revolver (669CP). My big problem with it is it keeps breaking the transfer bar (third one in this gun)! OK for a range gun. But, not reliable.

CONSTANNTLY, in the 1960's and '70's. I examined about 30 S&W revolvers for every one I bought. Colt also had such issues, Ruger much less so.
A retired CIA guy I knew had friends at S&W who timed his guns to minimum tolerances to avoid the problem. I suspect that police armorers were kept busy and sometimes rejected entire shipments.
