S&W 500 machine marks
Hello everyone
I just got a Model 500 8 3/8” with the Hi Viz front sight and 2 compensators. I love it and it I have started hand loading for it. I’ve put about 60 rounds through it so far.
I am having trouble cleaning the part of the frame under the forcing cone. It has machine lines and the residue does not want to clean up. Is this normal? Most of my S&w revolvers are older and I’ve never seen this. Any ideas how to clean it up? I have tried a lead away Cleaning cloth, solvent and a bronze brush and it doesn’t touch it. Thanks - Rich

Those marks are no big deal. Get a brass cleaning brush and some M-Pro7 gun cleaner. That should work fine.

I see the same discoloration on both of my 500s but then they've both had a hell of a lot more rounds down the tube than you have. No biggie, not worth obsessing over.
I carefully clean after each range trip but I don't get obsessive. I get very particular about the bore but no so much near the forcing cone.
Neither has those tooling marks but I don't think they're cause for concern. Don

I think I’m seeing horizontal tooling marks. The staining is nothing but is that what your are talking about ?

Yes I’m talking about the horizontal tooling Marks. Pic might not be the best. They are pretty bad and can be felt with fingernail

The staining on the rest of the gun cleans up easy after firing but I can not get this clean even with letting it soak in solvents and a brush

Try this. If you decide to try it the cheapest price is on their website.

Had to get a bit more aggressive. Polished out the tooling marks.

If those minor marks are the only issue with your Revolver - consider yourself very lucky - lol. Not uncommon and no big deal. The first time you fire it next session they will return. Trying to make that area as well as the Cylinder Face pristine is futile.

Lol. I agree, the revolver is very nice I definitely got a good one. The marks will come back when I shoot again but I think they will clean up much easier because I polished out the machine marks so now it’s smooth. A lead away cloth should clean it right up.
