How rare is a three inch 586?
I never recall hearing of a 3” 586 but my local range has one. I knew there were some 2.5” 586 but the 3” was a new one to me today. It was about 90%. So what is it worth?

Here is a portion of archives letter about the 3"ers. I'm thinking $2000 + or - estimate. 90% condition...perhaps less??? Let's see what others think.
Hope this helps.

A good buy at anywhere in the $1500-1700 range.
Did I just hear tires screeching on the road back to the range?

"What's it worth?" That will vary widely depending on the person looking at it. I can still remember when you could find 2.5" 586's & Pythons in a dealers showcase,,, and guys didn't buy them quickly. The 3" were even rare then. I think "Murphydog's" estimate is right-on.
A more important question to me,,,, What price was on the little orange tag??
Had most of us "found" it, I don't think the attached photo would have been taken in the store.

The 3" version certainly is a fine looking gun. No question about that! I'd go for it if I could.
Still, the whole 3" thing (in a mid/large frame revolver) confuses me. It must be the rarity that attracts (and commands the big bucks) 'cause I don't see where it's really all that different from 2-1/2" or even 4" for that matter.
Anyway, I'll stick with my 4" and 6" versions! They're perfect for me.

I don’t know about the 3”, but one is lucky to find a 2.5” for less than $2000.
To my mind, a 3” L frame is neither fish nor fowl - too long for ccw and not long enough for woods carry. Besides being rare I don’t see the utility, I prefer 2.5 or 4 inch barrels on my L frames. I know I am splitting hairs, but personal preference is personal. That said, I’d buy it in a heartbeat at < $1500 and it give it serious thought if it were more.

Looks better than 90% to me. You don’t see those often.
In the beauty dept, how about a 3” 581 custom?
A very special 581 Custom

Unlike the 2-1/2” guns, the 3” S&W’s have a full length ejector rod. You also get a little more velocity/accuracy compared to a shorter barrel and it’s easier to conceal than a 4”.
The main factor in the value is of course the relative rarity. 3” model 36’s were not uncommon and they don’t bring as much of a premium as the 19/66’s or 586/686’s.

Ouch
Hey, what's the Back Story to that S&W 686 3"Bbl?
An acquaintance's? A member of the Range? Did you
get to Test Fire it? Does it have the Box and Paper?
It looks in Great shape.
Thanks for Sharing and Picture.

And, in fact, I am a big fan of the 3" J-Frames. They make sense to me. Plus I think they look just right. In fact, I'm looking at one right now. Of course, almost everything vintage S&W is hard to find where I live... and there sure aren't any bargains these days.

Thanks everyone. I kind of purposely kept everyone in suspense. It’s a consignment gun at a range where I know the owners and employees well. It’s part of a 25 gun collection that has been up for sale at two shops now. This is the second shop they have sat on consignment and they are priced about 20% above market value. I don’t even remember what this 586 is priced at but it’s around 3k with a mildly negotionable status. The range owners know the seller is asking way too much and about five have sold already. Did I mention they have been on consignment a year?
While there are some real jewels is this collection, this 586 would not be my first pick. There are a couple of 3.5” 27s and several other 2.5-3” N frames.

A 2.5 or 3" 586 has been on my wish list for many years. But they're scarce as hen's teeth and priced way out of my budget.

This is the kind of thing someone does when they really don't want to sell, but they're willing to if they get a ridiculous number for the gun. If they really wanted to sell, the guns would be up on GunBroker with a reasonable reserve and then let the market speak. Or put them up for sale here at a reasonable market value.

Agreed, I actually know more about this collection than I should but can’t really share too much. Let’s just say the courts are involved.

Boy, I really hate seeing threads like this. I had a 3" back in the '90's and sold it when I was between careers. Is there a 'kicking myself in the butt' emoji?

That’s really cool- I’d never heard of any 3” 586s before.

There are well-heeled collectors who might pay $3K for a pristine example with box, but I agree this one is at least 20% overpriced. Sounds like there is some form of estate battle surrounding their sale too.
