Picked up a 640-1, box marked under Features "B.A.T.F." ?????
Hi, I just picked up a S&W 640-1 in the Factory Case I sold New many years ago. It is a Product Code 103694, under the Features it is marked "B.A.T.F.". It is a 2.125" 357. What do I have? In the day, I dealt with Ashland, SOG, Pa Police Supply, etc., I do not have the records of what Distibutor it came from. I assume it's a Contract overun. Anybody know anything about these???? Goggle was not helpful. It has a neat serial number of CCC6661. Thanks, Tim

Serial number help needed on recent guns! Triple alpha prefixes:
It's interesting, for sure. Over 4 years ago, someone else had one of these and never got back to the thread with an answer (Post_50).

ATF issued Model 640's as a backup/undercover gun at one time. This was when they were issued Sig semi automatics as their carry gun. I don't know if these guns had any special features that differ from production guns. I have a friend who retired from ATF last year and he had one issued to him at one time.

It sounds to be the perfect candidate for a letter of authenticity:

I would think documentation of its status as an official duty gun would raise its value above the cost of the letter.
