Like everything else these days it is indefinite and when you do get one it will likely be wrong. Meanwhile, no chance of the 686 going out of production. Kick back and enjoy the wait.

Between NICS wait time and production wait time everyone's WAITING! If there was a pandemic and a lockdown I'd understand it but......wait! Oh. I see......we're all STUCK ain't we?
Just a little humor for ya!

OK, I gotta ad my 2¢.
When a customer was getting anxious about when their order was coming in, we'd tell them, "we're waiting as fast as we can!".

Your gun is obviously backordered, but this may be due to high demand (more likely, and probably a shorter wait) or it not being currently in the production pipeline (possible, and a potentially very long wait).
Unfortunately, no one at your dealer, the distributor or the factory will be able to tell you when it will arrive. It is possible your dealer will be notified when it ships to him, but other than that patience is a virtue.

686+ is popular enough that production runs should happen fairly often. In normal times.
I would imagine Job #1 at S&W now is cranking out as many M&Ps as possible.

Welcome to the forum.
When I wanted a 3 inch 686P, I searched all the local stores, and it took more than a year to find one, and then they arrived in all the local gun stores simultaneously. I think they are produced in batches, and it may be a while until a batch of the one you want is produced.
Searching the online retailers like Bud's might be faster.
Good luck.

Welcome to the FORUM! Who knows? I have never bought a brand new revolver. Back in the late 70's if you wanted a S&W, you were put on a wait list. I wanted a 6" 17. Got a call close to 2 years later (from the dealer) asking me if I still wanted it. My answer was no. I bought a used 17-2 a couple of years ago.
Did you call on it? Bob

Unless your dealer is a distributor then he cant order from the factory... So - depends on who your dealer deals with distributor wise, and their allotment, etc will depend on when you will get your gun.

In the '70s I attempted to order a S&W 29, 6.5" barrel. Local dealers told me they were back-ordered indefinitely. Pay your money and take your chances.
THEN one, a stocking dealer, said that if I wanted one badly enough I could leave a note with them and when the distributor arrived they'd give me a call. They said the distributor kept the Model 29s in "the trunk" while telling buyers that they were the distributor's own guns, which he would generously sell for twice, or more, list price.
I declined.
Instead I special ordered a pair of 25-5s in 45-Colt. I was told it would be a wait, and it was. When they arrived they did not have the sights I requested. I told the dealer to send them back but he said I would wait twice the time to get what I wanted. So, I took what I got.
Are some distributors/dealers doing that kind of thing today? Hearing that manufacturers are running day and night to fill orders, I'd bet on it.
