Default Model 17-6

I just picked up a Model 17-6 a couple of hours ago. What can you tell me about this .22? It looks like a Model 586, only smaller It had a pair of unknown maker, thumb rest stocks on it, which I traded out for a set "K" frame target stocks. It looks much better. I'll post a couple of photos tomorrow.

The 17-6 was the only revision with the full under lug. If you have a 4" it would be a sweet find.

Not all 17-6’s were full underlug, the early run of the dash-6 looks just all the 6-inch Model 17’s that preceded it. The full lug 17-6 was shipped with the very desirable square butt Combat Stocks and yours are likely missing because they trade for nice money on the market for S&W stocks.

The 17-6 was made from 1990 to 1993. Early models did not have the full lug barrel. It was available in 4”, 6” and 8 3/8” barrel lengths with the 6” probably being the most common. Six shot cylinder, all steel construction and most came with the square butt finger groove combat grips.

The 17-7 and 17-8 that came later also had the full lug barrel. The 17-7 was six shot with steel cylinder but the 17-8 switched to an aluminum allow 10 shot cylinder.

The 17-6 is the perfect match for the 14-5 and 16-4 with matching weights for all three models.

Congrats on a great find!

I love my 4 and 6 inch 17-6s. I always bring one on each trip to the range. I recently picked up a 648 to round out my rimfire family.

My 4" 17-6 is one of my favorite K-22's great balance and great trigger. I had a 6" as well but sold it because I thought I didn't like the 6" full lug barrel. Another brilliant move on my part

My 17-6 and 16-4. I have looked for a matching 14-5 but they seem to be unavailable.

Great minds think alike. Although not searching hard for a 14-5, I’ve never seen one in the wild. Actually I’ve ever see a 16-4 or
17-6 until I acquired mine - I haven’t seen any others.

A 15-6 and a 17-6 w/o the under lug. And a pair of the 14-5s. I have a 6" 17-6 and 617. But still need/want to score a 4" model some day. Dont mind paying for it just dont like dropping the money on a bid, never seeing the gun in person.

Hi Everyone

A Model 17 has just come up for sale on an Australia Firearms Sale website. It says it's a Model 17-6 but it is 4" and does not have an underlug. Could this be correct or has it been tampered with? The serial number is AJZ0805. It's a little on the pricey side with the owner wanting $1250 AUD (about $935 USD). Model 18's are pretty rare but they really would not go over about $650 USD.

Thumbs up

I have a 17-5 with the 4", heavy non-lugged ramp-sighted barrel with an AVP range serial that matches the one you have pictured, so I'm going to go out on a limb and say that it is correct as pictured. My 4" 17-6 with the underlugged Patridge-sighted barrel is in the BDT serial range, so a little later. My guess is that they were using up the existing stock of barrels first. That much of a serial number overlap (AJ to AV) does sound a bit odd, though, for a -5 to a -6.

FWIW

Coincidentally, yesterday I spotted a pristine 4” 18-4 with original magnas but no goodies at a LGS for $929. I’d probably be a buyer at $799 OTD. I don’t see many around, especially in that condition. What would you guys consider a fair price in your neck of the woods?

I would say from my own experience that this is ODD and I have never seen one before, but that certainly doesn't mean it isn't all totally legitimate, especially when we consider that it's S&W and also that this was shipped outside of North America.

What I find include all of these:
--AVP serial prefix range for a 17-6 is odd, in my experience and I would much more readily believe it were a 17-5

--the standard ribbed target barrel was the norm for the first half (somewhat less than half) of the dash-6 variant, however I have never, NOT EVER seen the Combat stocks and the standard ribbed target barrel together. The full lug barrel and the combat stocks came at exactly the same time, at least in all mt travels and I've been following these since I got mine in 1988.

--the four inch barrel on a 17-6 is certainly less common, but so is the ramped front sight. The ramped front sight was usually a characteristic of the Model 18 but at this time, the 18 was not in production.

--the SCSW4 suggests that the full lug barrel/combat stocks did not arrive until 1990, and the AVP-serial prefix would tend to predate 1990 by at least a small handful of years. Of course, S&W and especially the three-alpha SN prefix always leaves as many questions as answers.

In looking over the whole thing, the only answer that seems to make quick and easy sense of things (to me!) is that this revolver is actually a 17-5 and someone added the combat stocks.

In the end, the most accurate answer is almost certainly that we have all long ago agreed to "never say never with S&W!"

This is my early 17-6 without the full underlug. Ser. # BEB0619. I paid $700 for just the gun and I think I got a decent deal. They are great guns.

^^If you have the original box for that BEB-prefix 17-6, I'd love to hear the born-on date. If you don't have the box, I'm going to guess it's roughly early 1989, in maybe the first 4-5 months of 1989.

No box and I haven't cared enough to get a born on date yet. Eventually, when Roy and friends aren't so busy, I'll get info on all my guns, but until then I'll just enjoy them.

The hell with it. I just put in a ship date request with Mr. Jinks. The book says BEB was 1990. We shall see.

According to Roy, and he would know, BEB0619 shipped in September 1989. So there you go.

A year or so ago I bid on a 4" full lug 17-6 with a BEB serial. I remember because I bid way over what I would normally spend, because BEB are my initials. Interesting that non lugged and lugged would have the very same prefix.. OH the gun went for crazy money at the time like 1800 + I think..not to me..
