Default Gunbroker Wow

Was anyone else watching this one that went out earlier today. Gunbroker Auction # 873822004. 3inch 64-3 in pretty good shape. Not sure of the numbers of 3inch 64's compared to 3inch 65's but this seemed to be a fairly high price for the revolver. Makes me wonder what my 3inch 65-3 with box and paperwork would go for.

Every nice vintage Smith & Wesson is going for big bucks on GB lately. My good wife laughs at me when my bids come in at about half what they end up selling for. Just happened to me again tonight on a really sweet 19-5.

It's getting awfully frustrating and discouraging. And I thought this hobby was supposed to be fun.

Shoot fire... been that way ever since the lock came along and the pre-lock prices went through the roof.

It did take a while. I remember gun shows in the early 2000s where you could buy armloads of 28-2s for $350 each, if one was so inclined. Unfortunately for me, I wasn't into revolvers quite yet.

$1500 for a 28-2...shucks I just sold a really nice one for $650 and it took a month. Maybe I need to use GB?

Just saw an FBI 1076 with maybe 5-6 mags go for a little over $4 grand! Holy smoke-a-moley! I need to find something I can part with, and try my luck at striking it rich.

Strange times indeed.

When she laughs, show her your inventory comparing the purchase prices with current values.

P.S. Hope it works better on your wife than mine.

I picked up a 3" 65 in the mid-2000s for $375. Nowadays, double that price is a bargain in some places.

Gun auctions are crazier than they’ve ever been lately...hard to put a real price/value on much given the current situation.

Let me just say that I am damn grateful for every vintage S&W revolver that I've been able to buy at something approaching a reasonable price. I look at some of the prices I've paid compared to what they are going for in this crazy market and it's astonishing. I could never afford them now.

The good wife should be able to cash-in big once I kick the bucket!

Probably a good idea to avoid keeping any ammo around.

It's far more than just that for me. It's everything that has changed from the "real" classics of old.

I could make a list, but you all know what I'm talking about.

Well, too late for that!

The truth is that if she were to sell off all of my ammo stash in this crazy market, she'd probably make more money than she would on the guns!

$350 in 2003 is worth $490 today thanks to inflation, so the investment was still good.

I have been watching GB pretty closely for a couple weeks. yesterday a blued 19-5( non P&R )with a box sold for 1350. 4" blue and fired.

I saw a M28 ( frankengun I think) go for almost 1000. Had 3T, but only targets stocks listed on box. Finish was like a model 27. Wrote to dealer 3X for info, no reply. Lot of fancy ad wording

M25-2 45acp cased 1400 to 1550.

M28's 900 to 1500, a couple in nice shape. These are mid 70's guns. Thank God I have a couple already

GI is no better see a lot of poorer examples at wishful prices.

For me, it is time to sit back and watch.

Also the quantity of guns for sale on GB and GI( at least what I am interested in) is down.

If you have something nice you want to sell, now might be the time.

A guy put a M10-5 X 2" on GB the other day and it was gone in an hour. Low serial # D121. Something over 90%. He asked 550, and said it was too low. He even had a big time gun dealer contact him about it, but it was to late. I emailed the guy. I have the same gun 98%+ in D138. Wonder how long that would last?

Time to sit back( for me) and smell the roses

Some police agencies ordered them that way and they don't sell as fast or high as a gun with a normal hammer I guess because most people want a normal hammer with spur.

I was on GB last night. Pricing was somewhat high on what I was looking at but what really surprised me was the number of guns that were actually for sale.
Not very many, some of the models I was looking at:

696 - only 3 with one at a ridiculous starting bid
66- 4” bbl & used for criteria only 11 of which only 4 were P&R guns
63 - 4” bbl & used for criteria only 13 and prices appeared way up
629 - 4” bbl & used for criteria only 8 for sale included IL and pre IL guns

I have not been on GB for some time but the quantities seemed much lower than a year ago and price for all but the 629 appeared much higher than a year ago. Increased prices are a product of low supply and high demand.

Wonder why police would want a bobbed hammer? Didn't a hammer strap keep the gun in it's holster? I saw a Michulek video in which he said he bobbed the hammer so as to get a higher grip to reduce recoil. But still, why police?

The bobbed hammer guns are DAO which many departments demand. Prevents " Oh, it accidently went off"

One reason is an OIS in Miami during the days of revolvers that was utterly inane (as are the vast majority). A "witness" claimed that the officer had cocked his revolver during the encounter and IIRC had it pointed at the offender's head. The prosecution (Janet Reno) claimed something to the effect of that being a sign of it being a disregard for the safe handling of the firearm and called the shooting not justified. The offender was shot as he made a drawing motion (remember that self-defense is preemptive).

My memory is rusty as this was more than 3 decades ago. Ayoob had written about it in some detailed in a couple of magazine. The officer was acquitted, but I think his career was ruined. Agencies started removing hammer spurs to avoid the frivolous claim.

Remember that most command personnel do not go through the mat room or the range, and are thus generally ignorant of the law and tactics. They are also political creatures (in the worst sense of the phrase), and the courage and integrity to stand up for their officers is ... often illusory. There was an article some years back in which a Chief actually said that it was easier to go to an officer's funeral than to deal with the backlash over a shooting in which the officer prevailed. Having been to a funeral just last year, and having seen the effects on the agency - I'd like to disagree.

Thanks for your thread. It makes me happier to have picked up a three inch 64-3 in the same condition at the gun show on Saturday. It cost me just $ 525. It will join my 2" 64, my three 3" 65's and my five 66's in the safe.

I had a 15-3 made into a ppc gun 45 years ago. The gunsmith wanted to bob the hammer to improve the speed time of the hammer drop. I did not do it though

I guess the increase in speed makes up for the lack of mass.

I would like to find a reasonably priced 3 inch blue 13 to go with my nickel and stainless 13 and 65-3. That animal doesn’t exist currently. There are a couple on auction sites. At the same time, there are 3100 guns from Wilson Combat on the same site. That should explain how supply vs demand works.

I watched Jodie Foster take out Buffalo Bill with her FBI issue Model 13 last night. Back when cops still carried wheelguns in movies

After she shot bad guys with a Kahr K9 I looked into Kahr and bought one as my first true 9mm CCW gun to supplant my Chiefs. Dirty Harry sold more 29’s for Smith than their best salesman. They got me on that one too. Haha. Funny how that works isn’t it.

Pardon my ignorance, but what site is GI? I know GA is gunbroker, and I've been to Gunsamerica, but this one stumps me.

No offense to you collectors but GB would be the last place I would go to look for true market value when purchasing a firearm.

Just go ahead and win one of those high-priced guns. That'll silence her.

It depends on whether you look at completed auctions or asking prices. I believe that completed auction averages show near a true value. Much closer than taking a gun to a pawn shop.

I look and have bought some nice guns from some good, honest sellers. Mostly it appears to be a sellers marketplace. I tend to follow guns that are like what is lurking in my personal inventory to gauge values.

Sellers are definitely in the driver's seat. The LGS cupboards are bare. I would sell some of mine if I thought that I could find them again when prices come down, but I have gotten attached. I do not think that it is generally a good time to buy most center fire guns. Hold!

I don't think they will go down. I am looking Gunbroker Wow at this as a buying opportunity.

That would all depend on her assessment of the value vs. what I had to pay. Getting a bargain on GB is all in the eye of the beholder.

I don't think I've ever gotten a real "write home to mom" bargain on GB. I usually end up overpaying. But when it's your only good option for the model and condition you want, what the heck else are ya going to do?

When you're as old as me, you can't wait too long!!!

P.S. Hope it works better on your wife than mine.
Heard a fella say that his worst nightmare would be his wife selling his guns after he's gone for what he TOLD her he paid for them. Ed

Canada already won’t let us in because of Covid-19. Major fines for Americans sneaking in. Strange world right now. But we can go to Slovenia or Mexico.
