Default Help identifying my no dash 686

Just got my first 686 the other day and I know little to nothing about them and was wondering if someone could explain mine a little bit. I don’t think the grips are original but I’m also not sure. Also have not seen an “M” stamped anywhere for the recall. The serial number is AUE5252.

Shot it today and it is a great shooter. Thanks for any help.

Welcome to the campfire!

That's a little unclear. If you already know that it's a no dash M686, which you found easily enough because you knew where to look, you're done with the identification. So what, precisely, do you want to know?

The 686-1 came out in 1986. So your gun was made between 1980 and 1986. Without the M it has not been sent back to S&W for the recall.

If that helps you, great! What other questions do you have - this campfire is crawling with experts!

You are correct with all that you have found. It is a no-dash 686, there is no M-stamp so the recall work has not been done and yes, those stocks are not original. If you seek original stocks, search the terms “goncalo alves target” and you will find that the original stocks are similar in size and shape to the ones you have shown. The ones in your picture appear to be fake copies to the original S&W stocks.

Prefix AUE is likely from mid-late 1986, so this would be a fairly late model 686 - just before the -1 was introduced.

The stocks are early (1967-'81?) factory Targets to which someone has taken a belt sander or something similar; the checkered areas and stock medallions are ground smooth. I suppose back in the day that was easier than buying uncheckered stocks but definitely not the stylish way to go. Enjoy!

Just a guess here, but this gun should have speedloader cutout targets right?

If you should find the correct stocks, and IF you send it back to the factory for the recall, do not send the gun in the original box or with the correct grips. Send it gripless. The factory has plenty of grips. I believe the grips you should have are what is dhown on mine below

Congrats on your purchase; and Welcome. The 686 in any variant is a true world class revolver.
