Looked At A 329PD Today
LGS just got in a 329PD and since I’ve never seen one in person I asked to look at it . Just who at S&W thought those wood grips were a good idea for this gun ?
They were uncomfortable in my hand and I wasn’t even firing it .
Those grips probably add 75 bucks to the overall price of the gun . Does anyone here actually use those grips ?

Mine stayed in the box, it wears X-frame Hogues. I think the penny pinchers at Smith had a say in the wood hand hammers.."maybe we won't have so many warranty returns with these". Or they were 50¢ cheaper than the Hogues.

The hogue X frame grips 'should' be standard issue on that gun. They aren't.
There is no use for those wood Altamonts on that gun.

I see lots of 329PDs with almost no wear (and yes, wood grips) for sale at the local shops.
They feel so good in the hand...before you touch off a 240gr JSP @ 1400fps.
I used to shoot my much heavier 629 5" with wood grips and finally succumbed to X-Frame Hogue Tamers. Now it's enjoyable.

I put Pachmayr Diamond Pro's on. Pretty good feeling grips. Full house .44 mags is still an issue for sure.

Got my first one in 2005. The wood grips were replaced with the S&W 500 X Frame grips before the first shot was fired. I've used them ever since on all of my Round Butt K, L, & N frames. Some remain factory original, some get modified (rounded butt and finger groves removed)
On factory stock on 4" 329
Modified on 2 1/2" 329 Alaska Backpacker

A long time ago, I bought a Hogue laminated grip with a flared base for my 500 Mag. Nice looking and let the gun ride up and rotate like a single action .44 Mag.
"Gentle" 500 Mag quickly destroyed the grip, Hogue stopped making them soon after.
Later I got some Herret Troopers, made to fit your hand. Ugly slap in the hand. Nice looking but mean on the hand. Sold them to a forum member (haven't seen him here in years). I did tell him how much I disliked the grips. He later told me he was happy he bought them.
My two 500 Mags wear factory Hogues and I won't change them.
I'm sure the light 329PD is unpleasant with wooden grips. Don

Lou, I think the older 329s were fitted with Ahrends. Much, much better quality but still a hand spanker for a light weight 44 mag.

About those Hogue X frame grips . I didn’t think they would fit an L frame .
Are they made in different sizes ?

They do fit a round butt L frame, as well as round butt N frames. At least the ones I bought fit on my 686 and 629.

I simply would not want a 329. Maybe I'm a wimp.
In an all steel N frame, barrel length does make a difference - my 6" 629 is not bad at all with full tilt 240gr screamers, but my 4" is a handful and I've never bothered to fire them in my 3" 629!

Light Weight
Nick B - Thank you for reminding me about these Unique S&W
PD series Revolvers.
I've been wanting a 41Rem Magnum. I see at one time S&W
made the 357PD (3=Scandium Frame, 57=41Rem Mag).
It's on my list, and I'll be on the look out for one.
I shoot my Revolvers a lot, and all have the S&W black synthetic
rubber finger groove grips. I've found they have the best on target
control, and shot to shot constantly. If your going to shoot
that 329PD a lot, get rid of the Wood Grips.
If you Google; "Christian Ed and Hobby Info", there is a very
good article on the 329PD.
Thanks again, the Best to you and your Endeavors.

I have 4 scandium guns none of which are 329s. a 296 a 396 and 2 325s. None of them have wood grips. The first 325 I had came with really nice wood combats. I trip to the range was enough of those. I can not imagine firing a real 44magnum in a 329 with wood grips. A 45acp is brutal enough with them.

Because they're pretty. Put them on, take a picture, then take them off & hide them away.
Cushie rubber grips are cheap & most of my revolvers end up with different grips anyway. Don't sweat it.

I don’t feel so bad about purchasing a set of Tamers for my 327 anymore! After a few back to back boxes of magnum loads I shot for reliability testing I called Hogue pretty quick. Can’t imagine what a 329 would feel like.

I remember well when the 329PD was introduced. A very short time later the LGS’s were well stocked with “LNIB” examples.
I had already been to the school of hard knocks on recoil so I was not biting on this light weight wonder.
Lesson #1. 12 gauge O/U lightweight. Great gun with light target loads in it. OK that is a lie. It was still no fun. But the idea was chukar gun. 1 1/8 oz game loads were akin to a mountain howitzer fired from the shoulder.
That gun made it 1 hunt and was sold to the next idiot.
Lesson #2. 300 WSM in a Mountain style rifle. The 300 WSM was touted as ballistics like the 300 Win Mag but recoil slightly more tha a 270. The 300 WSM recoils just like any other gun firing a 30 cal, 165 gr projectile @ 3100 FPS. Odd, but it felt just exactly like a 300 Win Mag to me.
Lesson I skipped. 44 cal 240 gr projectile leaving the muzzle @ 1400 FPS out of a revolver weighing slightly more than half the weight of a 4” 629 is going to be fun to shoot.

Well some people never learn, but some people modify the way they do things.
With a 240gr bullet running ~1050-1200 fps out of one it's no problem, but cushie grips ARE the key.
If you don't like recoil, don't buy a 44 Magnum, light or heavyweight.
