Default Talk me in/out of a S&W 460 revolver

I had my heart set on a Magnum Research BFR 10" in 460. I've been wanting one for for some time now. I've been saving up my nickles and dimes and finally was in reach of getting one.

...except I can't find one anywhere.

Now, I wrote that off to the current gun-run on everything firearm related but when I started looking up other BFRs and found all kinds of them, not 460 in stock.

Long story short, contacted MR, they've discontinued the 460 BFR....but I can order one from their custom shop. With the Bisley models going for just over $1000-1300 online, to get the same stinking thing from their custom shop is going to set me back just under $2000. I adored them at just over $1000. I loved them at $1150. I liked one at $1300. $2000? No flipping way.

So...now that pretty much leaves me with S&W. I don't really want their Performance Center models so I'm looking at the base model here:

Model 460XVR™ | Smith & Wesson

I'd like the scope the thing for long range bench shooting, I'd like to hear some thoughts form any owners.

I didn’t click the link and I don’t know what S&W offers today, but I can tell you a bit about my basic 460XVR, 8-3/8”. I guess you could say it is the original or base model?

Why I chose it over the .500 Mag (I had both and only kept the .460) was because of bullet selection. I figured at the time that I had a lot more appropriate .452” slugs on hand as I had gotten a great deal on a slew of Hornady blemished bullets, the 240gr XTP-Mag with the thicker jacket.

What I use it for? Fun and zero else. It’s interesting and eye-opening for newer shooters and anyone that hasn’t shot any of the big cannons. I shoot steel plates at 100-300 yards at the rifle range from a rest, or we’ll destroy something at short range depending on the setting. I have no plans to hunt or carry it in the wild.

With it’s massive weight, the excellent rubber grip and the compensator that works so well, I can honestly say that I enjoy shooting it more than I’ve ever enjoyed full boat .44 Magnum from any .44 Magnum that I have ever owned or shot.

My loads with the 240gr XTP-Mag leave the muzzle at 2,000fps and according to a ballistic calculator... are hitting at basically the same speed as a .45 Hardball at 500 yards. A 240 grain bullet, over 800 fps at 500 yards. That’s just a fun little nugget.

Yeah...that's the thing. Of course I go all cuckoo for Cocoa Puffs and got a complete reloading setup for it, so I'm kind of already knuckle deep in 460.

I've long wanted one and already reload for 44 magnum but just wanted something "more". I'm not really interested in the 500. With target shooting/range fun in mind, no real need for the ultra heavy rounds that the 500 can spit out.

I don't own one but sounds like a good plan. My only concern would be finding any ammo to shoot in it.

I like the 460 for the 45 colt/454 reason. I was really surprised that I was able to get reloading supplies for it so easily. I ran with the Hornady 4-die set, will probably stick with Hornady MAG projectiles in 240 and 300g and even stumbled on a case of Fed Lg rifle Mag primers last weekend, so I'm all set there.

I already have plenty of H110.

If you just going to shoot from a bench and long range I would opt for the 12" barrel. It is uncomped and will be a little more range friendly. There is a 14" uncomped verison also but only 300 were produced. The 14" comped version currently available is nice , but my preference is uncomped of a bench.

Any of this model is already configured to use a bipod with way of an integrated rail.

you can fabricate a bipod mount for the standard model but it require designing and machining a clamp mount, I will take a few pictures this weekend and post.

You will find shooting a double action big bore easier to shoot than a single action. Nothing wrong with the BFR, I have them also.

I’m like Sevens: “pure fun and nothing else.” Get one and it’ll make you smile, maybe even giggle . It’s fun to let other people shoot it too - and less intimidating for them than the 500.

That's the first I heard of shooting 410 shotshells out of a 460S&W.

Seems to me someone mentioned that a year or so ago, just to satisfy my curiosity I checked and the 2 1/5 inch 410's won't chamber in my 460V. Now if you try hard enough with a pointed hammer you might get a bang out of it. (caution sarcasm).

Read it again - he never said he shoots .410 shotgun shells in his .460
