629-2: Loose Faceplate, Everything Look Alright?
Hello, all.
I recently bought a late-80s 629. I took off the grips to give it some much need TLC and noticed the side plate was loose and some of the screws looked like they had been adjusted with the wrong sized screwdrivers. I removed the plate and everything looked right to my noobie eyes, but I figured I'd ask some experts.
Everything look okay to you?

Looks OK To Me!
It looks good to me but maybe a little dry. A bit of good gun oil will slicken the action and prevent rust. Lubricate all the parts that rub against each other. The real experts will be here soon. There is a lot of good information on this forum!

It is recommended to not cock the hammer with the sideplate removed. It puts lots of stress on the hammer stud.

Looks good. I agree that it needs some light lubrication. LOVE the unfluted cylinder. Nice!

Good to know. First time taking one off! Is there a book or website that is the go-to guide for anything internal?

A friend's coworker bought it new in Germany in a PX, oddly enough. I don't know the story behind the unfluted cylinder, but I dig it too!
Is there a best lubrication for the internals? CLP is my usual standby.

CLP or any of the gun oils are fine for a lube job. Just a small drop on each of the pins and the rebound slide spring.

Looks like a screw driver slipped on the left screw. Needs to be lubed with CLP or RemOil. Recommend you get Jerry Kuhnhaussen’s Smith and Wesson Shop Manual. Lots of good info there. Look for a YouTube video for proper lubing points.

Honestly, I feel that good ole Remoil (very light coat) applied with a soft brush and then wiped is plenty of lube. It really doesn't need more than that on the internals.

The wife and I put it through its paces tonight... Yoke/cylinder was hard to open after we got shooting. Need to figure that out... Otherwise, it outshot us. (Bonus pic of the wife and my Model 41.)

Often a grain or so of unburned power will get behind the extractor star making it hard to open until cleaned out. Another cause could be the ejector rod unscrewing slightly

If the cylinder opened fine before you took off the side plate, you possibly swapped the 2 round head screws when you reinstalled the side plate.

This was it. Ejector rod was super lose. Just a few turns before it came out. Thanks for all the help, folks.
