Default S&W 696 SCORE! DING DING DING

Today it was my turn to be the guy who walked out of the gun shop with a real steal. A 696 no dash LNIB for $600. I still can't believe it myself. It was on consignment. If it has been fired, I can't tell it, but I'll fix that as soon as I can find some 44 Spl. brass.

This is my first L frame and first 44 special. I still can't figure how a guy as unlucky as me pulled this off.

Turn yourself in at the nearest law enforcement agency office and take a signed confession with you for larceny.

Sometimes you just fall into a good thing. What's important is knowing what you see and acting on it. Sounds like you did just that. Good job!

I have to admit this one is a little out of my wheelhouse, as they say. Most all of my S&Ws are pre 1980 with the exception of a few 3rd gen semi autos and perhaps my 649-1. However I do know you don't buy S&W 44specials of any era for $600 anymore unless they are completely thrashed.

Exclamation 44's forever

Quote from RalphK22 - "Glad to be aboard. How do you like your 696?"

Mine was a Safe Queen when I found it. I paid $400 more
on it then you did on yours.

I like and reload the 44S&W Special. My current reload for
plinking; 240gr .429dia Lead RNFP / 5.0grs Alliant Red Dot
/ CCI LP #300 / Winchester / FPS 800?

My 696-1 is exceptionally build and finished. The only bad
thing I have to say about it, it is not a long range Revolver,
with it's short barrel it is very unforgiving past 10yds.
It is more of a novelty to me, but I like the 44Spl.

What an awesome find! That's like a dream come true for sure. I love the .44 Special, perhaps my all-time favorite round.

That's the truth. I had one a couple years ago that for sure had been shot and sold it fast for $1,100 or $1,150.

They are nice gunsand you stole yours.

I got ine for $725 3 or 4 years ago and was happy. I found mine in a small shop. Looked in case and there was a row of what I thought were all model 629s. Then my brain clicked on the one being a 696

Great job. Even the unlucky get lucky every now and then. I paid a bit more for mine. Here it is with a GP100 and both are great shooters.

Take the money you saved and buy a pair of Culina wood grips to make that gem really pop!

The seller (or their relative) probably bought it new at $400 and got greedy for a 50% profit . Enjoy!

Arrow Love the 696 * 44 Special * 5 shot

Laughed at the line, "I kept looking over my shoulder as I went out the door ..." - Well you should, that was Grand Theft!

I love the 696 like many here. I agree with the Culina mod!

I agree the ugly rubber grips will eventually have to go, but first need to get some brass, speed strips and maybe a couple of speed loaders. I have been loading 44 mags for decades, so all set with dies, bullets, etc.I even picked up a Lee 208 gr WC mold a few months back, which ought to make some nice target loads.

Why can't I get this lucky. And what kind of gun salesman knows this little about S&W revolvers that he puts this price tag on it? I'm sure the customer probably priced it, but come on!

I can make you hunt a hole at 100 with mine. It's as accurate as any of my other Smith 44 specials.

I ordered mine when Smith first announced them. Seems they were between 400 and 500 back then.............They were discontinued because they didn't sell well. People complained about the thin forcing cone etc.

Well I am waiting on brass to arrive. 300 NOS Remington cases for $60, including shipping, was the best I could do at this time. Cast some 240 gr SWC and 208gr WC. Hope I don't have any leading issues because of the electro, what ever you call it, cut rifling I assume this 696 has. All my other S&W revolvers are from before this method was used, and I have not had any problems with my cast bullets. I am thinking about trying my hand at powder coating for my 44 spl loads.

I also need to find load data for the Lee 208 gr WC and Unique or Bullseye powder

If you powder coat you will never size and lube again! 95% of my shooting is with powder coated bullets with zero leading problems! I have resized some .357" 158gr SWC to .355" in a Lee sizing die and all it did to the powder coating is shine it a little. DO NOT hot rod your 44 spl loads and stick with the lighter bullets. There have been people that split the forcing cone trying to make it a 44 mag!
